Well they're sort of similiar...shounen action/drama. I personally still think One Piece is a lot better because it doesn't focus on action like Naruto and HxH, where as One Piece is more of a character-based show.

I still do like Hunter x Hunter and Naruto overall though.

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

Nate, this series is simply great. I forgot about the animation. My only problem is how slow the torrents are for the series. I am DL the 41-50 batch and its taken almost 36 hours to DL. And I have a cable connection and I am only getting 11kb/s. On other DL's I usually get 40 KB/s using bittorrents. I guess people just aren't seeding. I can't wait to see more of the series, hopefully I will finish dL up to current episode 79 before the series becomes licensed.

Yeah, Kaizoku's torrents for the older batches are kind of slow. I blame Naruto for sucking all the fanbase and potential seeds for bittorrent!!

Err, at least it's easily resumable ^_^ The later episodes will generally have more seeds, and therefore be easier to obtain. I really don't think the series is in any danger of being licensed any time soon, since FUNimation lost its bid for it and will have to take some time to try again. Personally I'd love some R1 DVDs, but first I also wouldn't mind if Kaizoku-Fansubs would try to catch up to the Japanese releases (which they could....eventually). Their translations are top-notch, afterall.

But, yeah! One Piece rules. I'm glad you like it. I take it you're deep into/near the end of the Arlong arc? The first arc that involves all the main crew members...! Good stuff, good stuff.

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

Post subject: I'm now current
PostPosted: Thu Jan 01, 2004 5:08 am
I am now up to episode 79 the last episode Kaizoku-Fansubs have subbed for one piece. Which is kind of surprising, since they just released episode 176 in Japan. I really wish now that I am addicted to the series (thanks nate) would catch up. I mean saiyman already has episode 136 of 136 of Inuyasha subbed and released. If he can keep up why not Kaizoku-Fansubs? However, I will not complain since they are doing the fansubing out of the goodness of their hearts. God bless both of them.

I will say this about Kaizoku-Fansubs they are simple the best I have seen. Everthing is timed right and good translation notes to boot. The Inuyasha episodes are never timed right the subtitles never match the frames or are always behind, but he is always current. This has never been a problem for Kaizoku-Fansubs. So I guess what is comes down to is if you want quality you have to wait!

Now that I am current with the animated series. I haven't touched the Manga. A few things I would like to point out and I will try to do it with out spoilers for those of you trying to get current.

The Arlong Arc is greatness. The most interesting thing in the series for me atleast is not once the crew is assembled, but the pasts and events leading them to becoming crew members. Naomi in particular is very good. I also, like the fact that their are two very similar characters with the crew. Zoro and Sanji are very similar. Its rare to have very similar characters in anime groups - it makes for interesting interaction.

Since the series is actually further then 79 there is a few things that I am hoping for in the next 100 episodes to see from the animated series.

1) Luffy needs to be defeated in some way. His character is becoming way to unbeatable. He needs to get his ass kicked so that his character can develop more.

2) There needs to be a fight or a betrayal (("wink" a bigger one)) with in the crew. Something now that the series a little longer. Something that possibly breaks up the crew for a short while.

3) A love triangle needs to emerge between crew members. To give a sub plot to build up to something. Like Inuyasha for example, but not as drastic or dragged out. Its done in anime all of the time. I actually can't believe I haven't seen any indication of it at all yet in one piece. Sanji is more of a play boy.

4) There needs to be some kind of set back or loss that sets the crew back a few steps. This also builds character development.

5) More crew member interaction episodes. A few filler episodes that deal strickly with life on the ship would be pretty interesting and would help give us a better understanding into the characters.

6) Luffy needs to prove to me that he is the captain of the ship and not just Muscle. Luffy does have his moments when he is captain material, but I would like it to be reinforced a little bit more.

If the next 100 episodes can do a couple of these thing it would be great. This series has the makings of 250 plus episodes. Hopefully, (like alot of long anime series) it won't get the axe, before a proper ending can be established. Unfortunatly, it happens so much in anime.

I think you're really going to enjoy the Arabasta arc (which occurs after the 10 or so episodes in Drum Island, where Kaizoku-Fansubs currently is at).

I can personally assure you that #1 will happen at least once before the series is over, and #2 will likely happen in One Piece Movie 5 (the poster shows an evil-looking Zoro with the crew reflected in his cursed katana).

#4-#6 have certainly happened as well...the only thing I can't say has really taken a foot hold is #3. One Piece just hasn't really gotten into serious romance just yet. As you said, Sanji is more of a playboy than a loverboy. I don't personally see any couples developing out of the main crew, except maybe Sanji and one of the girls (Nami, Vivi, and another female I won't speak of due to spoilers)...since he's the only one who actively tries to get closer. I suppose if Zoro would have ANY chance at all with a female it'd be Tashigi...but that's only because she looks like Kuina. Usopp has his girl from back on his island, but Luffy doesn't strike me as someone who could get romantic *shrugs*. I get what you're saying though, and if they do decide to go that route later in the manga and anime it'll certainly be very good!

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

That brings up a interesting question. Are the Movies part of the series? And are they important for future episodes in the series or are they just really long episodes that could be placed any where in the series at any time? - Like alot of anime movies. I have only DL the 1st Movie so far...

As for the romance thing. Since the same people that were involved with DBZ are making One Piece it might not happen. DBZ was a million episodes long and it never had a love triangle or romance side to it. So One Piece might not get on as well, which would be a shame given the characters.

Luffy hasn't realized his romantic power yet! Think about it.

Oh, by the way how accurate is the Manga to the animated series? And how close are they? I don't want to see a DBZ freeza century fight again just to by time for the Manga. I wonder if the animated series will turn away from the Manga and go its own route although the manga I think is pretty far ahead of the animated series.

One more thing is anyone else doing fansubs of the series who is more current or atleast remotely close to 176?

Since there are inevitable periods in One Piece where the Straw-Hat pirates are sailing to the next island or whatever, there is really every moment availible for the Movies to take place during the series. Movie 1 I think takes place after episode 18, and movie 2 somewhere right after the Arlong arc.

Movie 3 is an exception though, because that movie really doesn't fit anywhere (they have Chopper, but no Vivi and no "female who joins after Arabasta." So it doesn't really fit somewhere).

The anime is actually very accurate in accordance to the manga. They only filler "arc" was the one with Apis and the dragons. There are also like 4 or 5 episodes right after the Arabasta arc that aren't in the manga, but they're kinda interesting from what I hear because they deal with some of the crewmember's pasts (i.e. how Zoro met Jonny and Yosaku). There are a few subtle differences along the way as well...for instance, Zeff (guy who saved Sanji) eats his leg in the manga rather than just cutting it off. Also the manga explains in like the very first page how Luffy gets his scar under his left eye (he stabs it to prove how tough he is as a kid). Both are more or less the same otherwise.

What I will say about the manga is that it has more "splash" arcs than the anime. A "splash" arc is a side-story in One Piece that is told by these single panel additions at the covers of each chapter. The Adventures of Mini-Buggy and Coby/Helmpeppo's side stories were all splash arcs that were told gradually at the start of each chapter. There are a few splash arcs that have not been animated yet, such as Jango's Dance Carnival (he meets and befriends Fullbody), Hachi's Underwater Adventure, and Ace's Grand Blackbeard Search. Some of these are pretty cool so I think it's a shame the anime hasn't gotten around to them yet.

To answer your other question...no...no one has really subtitled anymore One Piece episodes :( You could get the Hong Kong bootlegs if you don't mind shoddy subtitles and lots of name changes.

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

Well, some good news..... K-F is back to work fansubbing One Piece after they took about a half a month off for the holidays. So episode 80 should be coming around pretty quick.

At one point their was speculation that One Piece was licensed. I was wondering if K-F continued to sub the series even though animesuki took it off (then of course put it back on) Will K-F continue subbing the series even if it becomes licensed? Usually I am not worried because their is mutliple fansub groups subbing a series, but in the case of One Piece K-F are the only ones who are doing it. Although the series probably won't get licensed for some time now, however, K-F is still over 100 episodes behind the current 176 and it will probably be more then a year before they are remotely caught up. Which is alot of time for a series to become licensed.

Just something I was wondering about.

Well, it was rumored for a long time that OP had been licensed by FUNimation. Thus they removed their torrent links on animesuki. HOWEVER, K-F continued to fansub and release torrents on their own site during this period. It is my belief that they will not stop releasing episodes at least until they are more caught up and/or actual DVDs are actually released in Region 1.

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

Say Nate how often and when does a anime series become licensed? Do all series/movies eventually become licensed by someone? How often does a series become licensed right in the middle of the series? Or does this licensing thing happen usually when a series is finished?

It really does vary. Some series are licensed as soon as the first episode is released on Japanese TV (Haibane Renmei), while others have run on for over 100 episodes and still gotten no sign of a license (Kodomo no Omocha, One Piece).

This is what John from Anime Nation has to say about One Piece and Naruto getting licensed:

Quote:
The Naruto and One Piece anime TV series are among the most highly demanded anime ever among North American fans, and domestic distributors know it. Given the immense success of both titles in Japan, their Japanese licensors also have a pretty good idea of exactly how big these two titles are and how much international hit potential they have. Based on the Japanese success of One Piece and Naruto, and their ongoing high episode counts, it's not difficult to expect both titles to be multi-million dollar licenses. Smaller domestic translating companies like AnimEigo, AN Entertainment, Synch-Point and Urban Vision probably can't afford an investment on the scale of either Naruto or One Piece. And no wealthier company will proceed with a multi-million dollar deal without first spending time carefully weighing every option and fiscal concern.

Furthermore, from a Japanese perspective, One Piece and Naruto are not just average anime titles. These massively successful, high profile titles are calling cards for their production studios and distributors. These are the types of shows that are used as collateral in future business negotiations because they provide name recognition and evidence of previous massive success. In the same way that Sunrise Studios reportedly held back the American release of the Gundam franchise for years, waiting for a distributor that could guarantee American mass market television exposure, it would be wise of a Japanese distributor to be selective in who it gives One Piece or Naruto distribution rights to. Fans may love to see a title like Naruto licensed by a highly fan oriented North American distributor, but such a licensing agreement would not be in the best interests of the Japanese licensor. From a copyright owner's perspective, a massive, influential American television distributor like Sony or 4Kids Entertainment or the Cartoon Network would be the ideal licensor for Naruto and One Piece, not a niche market home video distributor like AD Vision or Viz or Geneon. Simply releasing a title like Naruto or One Piece in America through a primary home video distributor places limitations on the anime's virtually unlimited commercial potential. Both Naruto and One Piece have the potential to be the next Pokemon scale phenomenon in America. The full commercial potential of these titles just wouldn't be fulfilled by anything less than massive American over-exposure.

Japanese distributors are sure to recognize this fact, but major American distributors may not. Fox Television, for example, made a poor choice in trying to market Escaflowne as a Saturday morning feature title and suffered the consequences. Escaflowne was a commercial flop on American television. Then, a second time, Fox reportedly considered acquiring Detective Conan but reconsidered when they realized exactly how gruesome the show is. Likewise, Warner Bros. almost scored big with Cardcaptors, but again didn't quite understand what they had, didn't localize it effectively, and eventually canceled it due to poor market response. The phrase "once bitten twice shy" comes into play here. It may be that Japanese distributors are having a difficult time securing an interested American licensor of the caliber they want because major American television distributors may be hesitant. On the other hand, there may be a deluge of multiple competing offers from potential distributors of similar status. If this is the case, the Japanese distributors may be taking their time, carefully considering and weighing each offer and possibly even delaying the decision with hopes of seeing a higher bid arrive.

FUNimation has already confirmed that it is one of several distributors bidding on the One Piece distribution rights. Doubtlessly, negotiations for an English language release of Naruto are also in progress. These two titles are just too big, too high profile, and have too much potential not to receive an eventual American release. I think the question of the Naruto and One Piece anime coming to America is not a case of if, but rather when. But just based of the magnitude of these two titles, international distribution negotiations are bound to be more complex and time consuming than similar negotiations for smaller, less influential properties.

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

One Piece, and Naturo really don't concern me because even if they do get licenesed people will continue to sub the series because they are so popular. Isn't there like 7 fansub groups subbing Naturo its self. And as you stated its highly likely K-F will continue to sub One Piece even if it does get licensed or someone else will. Actually, it wouldn't be a bad idea if another group started right now.

The titles that concern me are...

Chrno Crusade
Full Metal Archemist
Daphne in the brillant blue
Peace Maker Kurogane
Stuff like this..........

Popular titles, but nothing like One Piece, Naturo, and Inuyasha in popularity. These titles also don't have that "american appeal".

I guess I just don't want to see a series that I am watching get licensed right in the middle of it and then have nobody sub the series anymore. I don't have a problem buying the DVD's once a series gets licensed, but what I do have a problem with is waiting a year for them and then paying a ridiculus price for them! God only knows how much money I have spent on anime DVD's over the years.

I guess licensing does vary and I will just have to take my chances.

A lot of groups do stop subtitling after a show is licensed...I was going along, loving every episode of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex...and BAM! Bandai licenses it, and everyone stops subtitling it. Only problem is the series is going to be 52 episodes long, and I was stopped around episode 18! We can't expect any Bandai DVDs for quite some time too...

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye
