Okay, this is a new topic. New topics require people reply to them. None of the crap pulled in the previous Evangelion topic...getting my hopes up thinking the board was actually going to start discussing/debating things again.

Anyways, One Piece is an amazing series. Probably the most popular in Japan right now. It's been called the next Dragonball, and justifiably so. 175 episodes, still running. 302 manga chapters (about 32 volumes), still running. Four movies, with the fifth in production. Two TV specials. Oh yeah, the anime has 4 different openings and eleven endings.

But, it's still great stuff. Really no filler to speak of, and EXCELLENT characterizations. FUNimation recently denied that they had the R1 license for it too, so that means Kaizoku can continue their brilliant fansubbing work. I hightly suggest you all take a peek at Kaizoku's Bittorrent Site so you can get started on the series. They have up to ep 72 finished, and that's more than enough to get into it. The manga's a billion times more difficult to get, but that's another story.

Oh, what's the show about you say? It revolves around a boy named Monkey D. Luffy who wants to become the Pirate King, and to do that he needs to get the treasure "One Piece" to prove it. The series essentially revolves around him gathering crew members and going on zany adventures, all the while mixing in some rock solid action and drama. Of course it's got its quirks too...Luffy's body is made of rubber due to eating a Devil's Fruit (there are several characters who have eaten different kinds of Devil's Fruits, Luffy just happens to be one of them). This makes him impervious to most forms of physical damage besides cuts and burns, but all Devil Fruit users have the downside of not being able to swim.

The rest of his crew consist of Zoro, a three-sword user who uses a unique style of having one katana in each hand and one in his mouth (trust me, it's the epitome of awesome), Nami, a sassy treasure-hunter, Usopp, a pinnochio-esque sniper who finds many ambiguous ways to make himself useful, Sanji, a smooth-talking lady-loving suit-wearing cigarette-addicted cook with an extraordinarily powerful kicking martial arts style, and Chopper...who doesn't show up for a while...but is the ship's doctor. His quirk is that he's a reindeer who's eaten the "Human" Devil's Fruit, giving him a human-like form.

It's great stuff. and I highly suggest you all watch it. It's by far the best shounen action show in my opinion, far outclassing Kenshin, Naruto, Hunter x Hunter, Yu Yu Hakusho, Flame of Recca, or whatever.

There. DISCUSS.

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

Don't be thrown off by the first opening if you don't like it (I didn't)...they replace the first opening with the second about 45 or so episodes into the series (and trust me, by that point, you'll almost certainly love it). It's called "Believe," and it ROCKS. The first ending, "Memories," is pretty cool, but again I thought the second ending "Run! Run! Run!" was much better.

I actually sort of left out two or three other crew members, but that's just 'cause they'd be a major spoilers.

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

I love One Piece. ^_^ I also happen to love Zoro as well, can't go wrong with a three sword toting badass. He balances out LuffyÂ’s happy-go-lucky personality. Characterization is definitely one of the series strongest points. Unfortunately IÂ’ve only been able to watch probably the first 30 episodes or so, but with vacation coming up, IÂ’ll probably watch the rest that I got on disk. *Wonders what number she got to* ^_^

Hey, ep 30 is when it really starts to get good too ~.^ I take it then that means you've seen Sanji join Luffy? After that it's smooth sailing.

The BEST arc in the entire shounen action universe takes place in One Piece, right after they enter the Grand Line. The whole Crocodile/Vivi/Albasta arc is AMAZING. Lasts for about 10 manga volumes and about 70 or so episodes (it includes several sub-arcs within it). I swear it ended more perfectly than any other arc within a series that I've ever seen, and that's saying a lot considering how much I liked the Kyoto arc in Kenshin.

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

I've seen the first episode and it took me a while to get used to the animation but after that, it was pretty good. I didn't think it was great, but having read your reviews I will have to get some more ^_^

~ Links ~
[ My Final Fantasy Site | Tenchi Muyo! Never, heard of it until now. Looks like its on Anime-Suki which means that it hasn't been licensed yet, which is a good thing. I am DL the first 10 episodes as I type this. Won't get to see them until tommorrow. I guess that it gives me something else to DL from Anime-Suki I have been "accidently" DL live action sailor moon so far on that sight.

You really can't base that much on the first episode alone...the "true" adventure of One Piece doesn't completely take form until Luffy gathers the 4 main crew members (about 30 episodes into is when Sanji officially joins, and then it's on to the Arlong arc). That's not to say the stuff before it isn't absolutely amazing either. It's all good ~.^

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

Post subject: Ummm Yeah.

Well, I just saw the first episode and I really hate the animation style. Of course I am a little biased since I am a fan of the old school style. Also, a rubber man? I am wondering what age group this anime is intended for? Of course this is just going off the first episode. I guess I will just have to continue watching until it gets better like you said until episode 30ish.

I do hate the animation style though.

Post subject: Re: Ummm Yeah.

You know, I've never heard anyone mention the animation style who got farther in the series. I don't mention it because frankly I think the animation is just fine. It perfectly fits One Piece's style. It does get BETTER if you must know, though I never saw a problem in it to begin with. The Movies in particular have a very smooth animation, though the plot somewhat suffers from the limited time frame (this is another story).

I'd say One Piece's age group is late teens/early twenties...especially the manga. There's some pretty poignant stuff in both versions. The show has a very healthy balance of drama, action, and comedy. And WOW is Luffy badass when he gets mad. Zoro is probably my favorite character, but Luffy has all the best fights. Do NOT put off by the rubberman business...trust me, in One Piece, it works.

I only said it truly picks up after 30 episodes because while it is amazing before that 30 episodes is when the Arlong arc begins. And that's the first arc where all 5 main crew members are involved. It's not to say that the previous stuff with Buggy, Kuro, and Don Krieg is bad in the slightest.

Heck I love One Piece but I haven't even gotten to the Alabasta arc within the Baroque Works saga in the anime (I read it in the anime). Trust me, One Piece is a very adventurous type of anime...it's something that just keeps on growing on you.

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

Maybe I should actually look my One Piece manga now. Do you like the adventure genre? Do you like characters that want to have fun, and let the audience/reader have fun with them? Do you like epic tales? Outstanding and surprising (I mean he's made out of rubber! Who'd think that would be cool?) action?

If so... Then, yes, you'll like One Piece.

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

Yeah, its a pretty good series SSJNate. I am still unable to ignore the horrid anime style though, but the series its self is very good with a very interesting plot and concept behind it.
