I was just browsing the internet and found a pretty good anime. It's fairly short, only about 25 minutes, but the character and plot development is exceptional. It deals with a young female mech pilot who has left Earth, and communicates with her love back home, her messages taking longer and longer to reach home the farther she goes.

It's a great film, all the more impressive as it was entirely made by one man, Makoto Shinkai, on his computer (he and his fiancée provided the original voices too).

It's an interesting idea and well done. The whole distance issue reminds me a lot of Gunbuster which also deals with the time traveling aspects of faster than light travel.

If you liked this Makoto Shinkai latest project "5 Centimeters per Second" supposed to be excellent. I've only seen the first part but I keep on intending to acquire the rest ^^

Yeah, I know he did it all by himself, but I didn't know it was on his own computer! And I'm not sure if this is the version where it was voiced by he and his fiancée, as there are two versions, one with them and one without.

But yeah, I'll have to check that out. Thanks!

If you get the DVD there is another feature on it called "Her Cat" (I think) that is equally as good, tho quite different. It IS voiced by them both.... I think they also have both VA tracks in the audio but I can't recall....
