okay... firstly, for you're information, Yujenisis, "washuu" is spelled with the long "u", and is proven by using this address: dir.yahoo.co.jp/News/Tele...hi_muyou_/ and looking at the bottom-most entry. There "washu" is spelled with a long "u". "ryouko" is also "technically" supposed to be spelled with an "ou" as can be seen on her wanted poster in "tenchi universe" (ep: 15-"no need for an escape!") andpossibly elsewhere... however even the japanese generally ignore shorten the "ou" to "oo" (ordinary long "o") in everyday speaking. As far as the written forms go, most long vowels can be shortened, but not vice versa.
nextly: i'm reasonably familiar the cries of agony caused by the honk kong version of "dragon pearl" us.imdb.com/Title?0122050 and i'm well aware of the risks in turning any cartoon (not just japanese ones) into live-action films: a good case in point would be Inspector Gadget us.imdb.com/Title?0141369 (where Michelle Trachtenberg us.imdb.com/Name?Trachtenberg,+Michelle also first came to mind from for washu). speaking of which, Sir Red XIV makes a good point about washu. the list is officially updated as so:

Washu (younger)--Michelle Trachtenberg
us.imdb.com/Name?Trachtenberg,+Michelle
("my" wild hair! just try her with wild hair!)

Washu (older)--Portia de Rossi
us.imdb.com/Name?de+Rossi,+Portia
(red hair dye needed... lots of it)

oh, and sorry Nick, but i can quite buy Karyn Parsons us.imdb.com/Name?Parsons,+Karyn as mihoshi... right type wrong, skin color... and hair color. but it was a good try, i'll give you that!

I wish that joy was mine to own, naturally I shy away...from joy and the light of day, Natural is dark that I have known. It cloaks the hurt, it cloaks the pain, all causes give way for mine own gain, what is the color of my despair? A wound in my soul that I cannot bear. I have come to love these things, power...of the dark it springs, a tattered soul much abused, knavery's plain face never seen til used, do you know the color of my fear? When I will not shed a tear. numb and void to all around, like an animal stalks without sound, hate...I am filled with hate, Oh God I wish it would dissipate, and leave me free to feel the wind, and make this darkness end. See the trees, See the moon, see the lake and the loon, Alone...I am lonely, please..please do not judge me, The dark has not won me yet, inside the fight is well met, inside the light...though shadowed still, seeks a way my heart to fill, sadness and despair I fight, seeking to destroy this blight. Soon dark or light my soul will claim, the Dark the Light, for now...the same.</marquee>

I don't think any of us would really wanna see a live-action Tenchi Muyo. I mean, no matter how good the actors/actresses are .. and how awesome the special fx can be .. I don't think there's any way it's gonna turn out as good as the anime.

[But that Mila Kunis as Sakuya is cute =P]

The correct spellings are...

, , and .

For Romanizations, I use Ryoko, Ayeka, and Washu. But it's not like everybody won't know who you're talking about if you spell them Ryouko, Aeka, and Washuu. Well there is a differentiation between long and short sounds in Japanese, so on a technical level it is incorrect.

Romanizations are meant to be a conversion of Japanese sounds to English. Doing the romanizations incorrectly will change the pronunciation, and possibly it's very meaning.

That is the danger.

Ten years ago, something happened.
Something small. Indeed, indeed. One of the terrible facets of translation is making sure what you say in one language equals (more or less, depending on sentence structure, syntax, and a whole host of other variables) what you say in another. y limited studies in Japanese syntax say clearly that there is a difference between, let's say, a single "u" as apposed to a double "uu." Even though they may have the same phoneme (letter sound), the "uu" is held for a beat longer, giving it a different meaning in a word.

Of course, I'm restating what other people have already said in essence, but it's worth repeating.
According to top scientific research, 3 out of 4 people make up 75% of the population.
