I don't know what problem people have with Shin Tenchi other then it's gawd awful animation. It seriously looks like it's done by some cheap Disney knock-off.

But Animation aside it has a much much stronger plot then TU, stronger characters then TU, and I felt was infinetely superior to TU which was nothing more then a whole lotta stupid fillers and a pretty much non-existent plot. The comedy just wasn't there at all in TU.

If your a Tenchi Fan you have to see Shin Tenchi, just so you can claim to have seen all the Tenchi there is. If you thought TU was awful, as I did, then you will most likely enjoy Shin Tenchi.

Me personally I quickly got passed the bad animation and the whole "popularizing" thing (Tenchi in baggy cargoes), Im not quite as shallow as many people who judge it purely based on looks. I think it's plot was very well done, the characters were also very well done. I didn't like the new character designs at all, but purely based on entertainment value, it was well below the OAV but tiers above the poorly made Tenchi Universe.

You have to choose what you want. But if you claim to be a Tenchi Fan, you need to see all that you can.

My 2 Cents.

The characters look different from the OAV and TU, the characters presonalities are just weird, and the plot sucks... But, hey, it is Tenchi... I'll watch it if I'm bored... The music was good though...
*hums ending theme from Shin Tenchi Muyo*

My ratings of the Tenchi series:

1. OAV (Gotta love the original!)
2. TU (Same basic characters, flimsy plot)
3. STM (Weird versions of the characters, weird villans, flimsy plot, too damn goofy! >_<)

<marquee width="399" height="19">No one can out-dance evil!</marquee>
BN/OC Community Message Board

You very sanity depends on how far you're standing from the TV set when TiT plays... The furhter the better!

You have to know... this show is the home of one of the most hated characters in anime ever!!! It's not a normal person... Many of us have associated her with...the devil!

Oh sure, she look defenseless enough if you don't know her and you might just think that she has a bad haircut...

But once you get to see her possessive/obsessive side, buying out lunch just to get...his...attention...then you'll have experienced much of what many of us have tried to forget!!!

And the bad stories and animation make it bad also...

...living free under my own flag...

I am going to br strait forward and blunt.

IT SUCKS A**!!!

The animation is corny, the char's are silly, the plot will drive you away, once you watch have of it you will want to abort the mission! You will not want to Retry! And you would rather fail a test about it then watch TIT ever again!

It doesn't take even a monkey in a flied suit to figure out TIT sucks and every one already knows Tenchi Muyo is a superior show!

If you like TIT more then TM, you have a brain the size of an ant, or you have mihoshi's brain!

Well it actually HAS a plot, which is more then I can say for Tenchi Universe.

Tenchi Universe was just so poorly made. Honestly none of the series can be compared to the OAV...it's just stupid to try.

But TiT is just so much better done then Tenchi Universe. Most of Tenchi Universe is stupid filler episodes which aren't even entertaining. Shin Tenchi has a plot, you may not like it, but it has a far stronger plot and more developed characters then TU.

But as mentioned before you cannot compare the OAV to either of the other series'. As they weren't made by the original companies or people who made the OAV. (Well at least the creators had very little influence)

Its definetly the worst of the Tenchi's, but as long as its Tenchi I'll watch it. There is one good thing about this show though, the cameos. See if you can spot the cameo's of characters from other anime shows, at the least I saw Mr. Fujisawa from El Hazard and a couple people from Burn Up W!

Oh, there are a ton of cameos in Shin Tenchi it's pretty funny-mostly the cameos are from bad animes like BURN UP W...though El Hazard is good...well except that ONE series "The Wanderers" which was a waste of cels.

Don't let people throw you off dispite having crappy animation, gawd awful character design...it's a series that is just so much better then Tenchi Universe. Though both series after Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki sucked because they lacked the soul that the OAV had.

Shallow people are the people who cannot see the good in something when on the surface is not attractive. Shin Tenchi isn't very attractive but it's a lot stronger then Tenchi Universe which is just sooo poorly done and just recycles the animation from the OAV most of the time.

I think Tenchi Universe is the worst series out of all the Tenchi series. Anyone who hates TiT because of the animation and character design which seems to be everyone, it has a lot more emotion then TU, a better plot then TU, better characters then TU, all around it was better done then TU except on the surface...which is the bad animation and character designs.

TU is the worst Tench series folks.

Post subject: Tenchi in Tokyo - after 5 eps it's good. (me good English)
PostPosted: Fri Oct 26, 2001 7:45 pm
Well, I've watched the first 5 episodes of Tenchi in Tokyo over the past 5 days as it began it's first ever run on UK TV.

And I must say that so far I have thoroughly enjoyed it.

It's not been perfect - far from it, far, far, far - even if you ignore the distracting change in animation, character design and voices, but on the whole it's gotten off to a much better start than Universe did.

As far as the animation goes I can now really see what everyone was saying about it - but you can't say that it's not an interesting shift in direction. At times it can become quite like you are watching a live version of the No Need For Tenchi mangas, IMHO anyway.

The character designs are... weird. Kiyone was barely recognisable at first, but by and large the others aren't that bad. Ryo-Ohki seems to look worse and worse with each passing spin-off series - and she incredibly gets even more annoying than she was in Universe. I quite appreciate the change in Tenchi's design though.
Okay, so we have him wearing combat trousers and hooded tops, but he does look a lot more confident than he did over the course of Universe - something that really makes sense, after going on the run from the Galaxy Police, travelling to alien worlds and fighting in a battle to the death with the most powerful man in the galaxy, you'd expect life with the girls on planet Earth to be a heck of a lot easier for Tenchi.
And I must say that I greatly appreciate Ryoko's change in wardrobe from Universe - 5 episodes and we've not seen that awful green and yellow striped number once!

One VERY welcome change in TiT is Kiyone. I... I don't think I hate her any more. She's finally learned to stop whining and moaning to everyone about Mihoshi and decided instead just to start shouting about it - something that actually works, making her less mellow has, in my opinion, made the relationship between the two characters rather enjoyable, rather than the very grinding and irritating one we were presented with in the previous series.

As for the wacky monsters that are popping up... Well in the first episode they appeared as a welcome change of pace from the usual Tenchi format of one big bad guy who will be built up over several episodes and then dealt with in an epic fight scene ending with he and Tenchi striking and then pausing for about 5 minutes while the audience waits to see which one of them has actually been hit - as if we couldn't guess. Where was I? Oh yes, zany monsters. They've certainly been interesting, but I do hope they're not overly regular... indly don't comment on this, let me live in hope! ;) That big purple mobile phone monster was brilliant though, because the writing had him revelling in the sheer stupidity of his own concept as a big purple thing.

And then there's Sakuya... Well, so far I don't have anything against her. A normal down-to-earth girl seems a natural addition to Tenchi's life - someone who just seems to be there getting in the way, but not in a bad way, rather like Noboyuki, except even more clueless.

Anyway, I'm keeping an open mind and am really looking forward to the rest of the series.

Oh, and if you reply to this, kindly refrain for revealing any plot details. I've managed to avoid finding out what happens thus far - don't ruin it for me now!

-------------------
Limited Edition Pic-less siggy! (okay, I need to get my own webspace...)
"And when people tell me what is ok and what is not, it should not be an unexpected scene seeing I extend my middle right hand digit and say: Hey, would you like lemon or lime with that piece of advice mister?" - The Hives

Why not take a trip to "Substitute Tenchi"! Go on! You know you want to!!

I totally disagree with you, Yuje. I think Tenchi Universe is WAY better than Tenchi in Tokyo! The plot in Tenchi in Tokyo wasn't all that great compared to the one in Tenchi Universe, and there weren't THAT many filler episodes. About halfway through, there are no more fillers. It definitely has plot. I odn't understand why you think it doesn't. As far as I'm concerned Tenchi in Tokyo is DEFINITELY the worst of the three. I really didn't like the early episodes.

If there were no filler episodes from halfway through on, then how would you describe "No Need for a Ghost"?

Or, for that matter, "No Need for Runaways", "No Need for Swimsuits" or "No Need for Hunger"?
The connections to the main plot in those episodes were incredibly weak, and only served to highlight it's stupidity (I mean Yagami is stuck in one place for at least a day in "...Hunger" - now neither the Galaxy Police nor the Jurai Military were able to track them down in that time. I mean, are we supposed to believe firstly that these two forces are that incompetant, or that the Yagami had been fast enough to completely outrun any ships following it?).

I agree with Yuj totally on this.
The only episodes in which anything important happened were "...Rebellion", "...Escape", "...Knights", "...Karma", "...Ryoko", "...Showdown" and "...Conclusion."
Any series so heavily relying on it's last 5 episodes to get the plot moving is going to have to have some seriously good filler episodes in order to be of any reasonable quality.
And on that criteria, Universe failed rather miserably.

Would you like me to go through them telling you which ones were fillers? Most of that series was fillers and the plot was WEAK WEAK WEAK. "Ohh no we are wanted because evil Kagato put a price on our heads and is pretending to be Yosho!" Yes, if thats what you can base an ENTIRE 26 episode series filled with 13 episodes of complete unhindered creative idiocy of trying to GET TO jurai, you have TU. No, no there are fillers throughout and thats about all there is. There are four episodes of development and plot-thats it. I would be glad to break them down for you if you want me to.

And thats not even the beginning. TU had not plot, it had shallow character development "You mean I am the prince of jurai?!" and there were no stunning developments as the whole damn thing was inconcieved. I've watched it once-that was all I needed. I own both

Quote:
It definitely has plot. I odn't understand why you think it doesn't. The fact that there is really only ONE plot arc filling 26 episodes most of which are filler episodes is just absurd. It was just soooo poorly made as comedic animes go and totally NOT funny.

You hate Tenchi in Tokyo because your shallow and you see only the bad animation and character designs. From that you refuse to acknowledge that is has a deeper plot, superior characters, and a better meaning then TU ever could manage to pull off.

You people seriously need to let go of all this shallow stuff. You can't judge a book by it's cover-but you all think you can. I've talked it over with my fellow Tenchi fanatic (Yash Sakamoto from Japan), and he hated TU for the same reasons. Now he is a Gundam Wing fan so his opinions should be taken with a VERY large grain of salt ~.^ but nevertheless he is one of the most objective otakus I know.

But then again it's all based on opinions, however you cannot argue whether something has a plot or not which is why I am now saying you have an UNEDUCATED opinion. You allowed yourself to be turned off to something because of it's looks, and thats immature and silly. Hopefully someday you will see the importance of doing otherwise.

You can say that TU is better then Shin Tenchi, it's personal preference. But you CAN'T say that TU had a better plot and less fillers. TU had FLAT FLAT FLAT characters, plots and situations. Shin Tenchi was much superior in that respect-you just couldn't see it because you were letting your shallow mentality shut you down.

Both series crumble in comparison to Tenchi Muyo: Ryo-ohki which was the only one where the original creators actually CREATED them.

My opinion on Tenchi in Tokyo: It is a very nice TV series but Tenchi Universe is many times better. The animtion sucked and the ending was open.

TiT was not very Tenchi-ish.

It's a sin to kill a mockingbird.

Bellet of Ryo-Ohki
