Post subject: My Gripe With Tenchi Universe
PostPosted: Wed Sep 11, 2002 6:06 pm
I don't mean to be an ass. But I have issues with Tenchi TV. Long story short, I saw a few episodes of the OVA on CN and was astonished, so I forced myself to sit down and watch all of Tenchi Universe. The first Episode I saw was Episode 3, and Episode 4, the fore dealing alot with Ayeka, and the later dealing alot with Mihoshi, both grew to be some of my favorite characters. And Tenchi Universe bastardized both of them, taking Ayeka's snobbyness way to far, and making Mihoshi a TOTAL dolt. I was very uset with the show, needless to say. It was a good show, I'm just real pissed with it's writers for those reasons. No, I'm not trying to chage your mind (you like Kiyone, which was one of the redeming qualties of the show). But I would kill alot of people if I went there, wink wink. *starts writting to do list* Kill Ayeka, slap Mihoshi til she makes sense, give Kagato some thing to REALLY cry about, beat the cunning and adorable qualities of Washu back into her, slap Ryoko a little for being stooping to being a petty theif, crack Tenchi's skull for not being normal AT ALL............ and it goes on.....................

More points

BW: Don't forget Nagi!

And the TV series wasn't that bad... try watching Shin, then report back to us.

Me: Shin....................... Tenchi? Oh......... you mean that show that I watched and split my skull open over, then took out parts of my brain to erase the memory of it completely and totally. Shin Tenchi does'nt even deserve acknowledgement to it's existence. I have GRIPES over Tenchi Universe. Gripes are gripes, they don't mean I did'nt like the show, though it dissappointed me greatly.

IRL: *just now reads all of Silverwolf's post*

... slap... Ryoko?

...

Me: Let me make a diagram.

OVA Ryoko - Try to get into pants of

Universe Ryoko - Try to get into pants of, then slap for being a shell of a character in comparison to her much lighter hearted original. For robbing a bank, for being a bitch, for being characterized poorly. (I mean, robbing banks is what writters have villians do when they run out of ideas for how they tic the heros off)

Shin Ryoko - ........... KILL.............. KILL....................

Drax: Dude, Ryoko robbing a bank and not giving a @#%$ about is a redeeming quality. Its what makes her badass. Aeka would never pull something like that off. Well, I never realized how bad Tenchi TV was compared to the OVA. I still like it though.

Me: ....................... a badass you say? A woman with near immortality, and near endless power, enough to commit mass genocide on a heavily armed civilization single handedly, resorting to common theivery makes her a bad ass? I would think not. Ryoko is the kind of person to kill, conquer an entire planet, possibly take whatever the people had. She has no need for money, and it disgusts me that she lowered herself from her mighty destroyer statis to that of a common crook. She what I'm saying? Maybe...... no, never mind, that still makes it stupid. Not giving a @#%$ about people does make her a bad ass, but the thing is, she does give a @#%$. ESPECIALLY ABOUT TENCHI, and then she takes off, Knowing they are starving, and does'nt come back. That is HORRIBLY contridictary. They were obviously running out of ideas on that one.

Me, again: I watch ANY of the normal episodes, from OVA 3 and higher, and almost all of the ones from Universe, and it makes NO sense. None. Why would she abandon some one she was willing to DIE for in other episodes. Remember Universe's Washu introduction Episode. Ryoko actually stood inbetween what every one thought was a horrible killing machine and Tenchi. WAAAAAAAAY before she left him to starve in outer space. It just, makes me want to destroy things that these writters could be so contradictory. ARGH.

Atog Ed: Shin Tenchi had Sakuya. Sakuya is the love of my life!

ME: BE SILENT ATOG!!!! Failure to admit how shitty Shin Tenchi was will result in the immeadiate suspension of your life. *hands him yellow slip, blasts his head off* You can return from hell next tuesday. We should have your head sowed back on by then.

The Eighties Rocked!!!!
Nothing quite like sitting back, drinking lemonade and rootbeer, and posting on the net, while listening to everykind of rock from Kansas to Metallica.

People some times forget...... life is an endless spiral of disappointment, inequality, and sorrowful miseary, so very much so, that I would rather not live in reality, that I would rather not obide by man's laws and will carve my own fantasies and philosophies from the ruins of a society that I refuse to accept. I will stab up for what is right, and I have realized one thing in my ventures, to take life for what it is....... one big joke........... and yes, I am a crazy bastard.

well, they did doa number on it, in TU, that cannot be denied!

in fact you're analysis of aeka and mihoshi is exactly what i had observed myself... but the bit that really gripes me is how they changed all of the background material like the origins of the characters, the historical events, etc. i mean what happened to azusa, funaho, misaki?!

oh wow, i'm no longer just a space pirate, i'm an "A-1 Class Criminal"!!

anyway, there was one other thing: kiyone's voice...

sherry lynn is sasami, therefore sherry lynn makes a good tsunami (also missing from TU), in fact sherry lynn's sweet and charming voice makes a VERY good tsunami, but... kiyone should have been voiced by wendee lee! although i'm now somewhat attached to sherry lynn's kiyone, i must overcome whatever emotional attachment i have long enough to say that wendee lee is technically-speaking "better suited for the role". alas, she did eventually get the role in the third movie, but she has only like two or three lines inthe whole flick! ...pity.

The one good thing I can say about the TU version of Tenchi compared to the OAV version is, at least we got to see him kick some ass without his powers. Though one has to wonder how, in ep 14, the crew of the Juraian ship was able to capture Ryoko & Ayeka, when Tenchi was able to wipe the deck with half of them using a stick (and of course Yosho did the same to the other half).

And my biggest problem with TU Ryoko, aside from her generally being shallower & less interesting than the OAV version, can be summed up in four words. "No Need For Hunger". Even for the TU Ryoko, letting Tenchi starve while she lounges around, eats gourmet meals, and robs a bank is ludicrously OOC. That ep is on the Shin Tenchi level of badness. Truly one where the "No Need" in the title was all too accurate.

The REAL Happy Couple

All of the series had things I liked about them, so I don't find anything against any of the series, just on account that I like new things. Yes, I'm a pretty agreeable guy, but it's the truth.

"Love is a battlefield..."

No need for Hunger....the Ryoko supporter's worst nightmare.
Well, other than that...I loved TU. My favorite episodes of all the many series were in it, the last three of TU. Esp. No need for Ryoko.

Sometimes it's Darkest just before Dawn.

<marquee>When the cold dark waves on the shores break,With a clouded pale moon foretelling death,Stand by the shores of the endless lake,The Stars, the Wind, and the Last Breath..When time stands still near the dark trees,With the stars so cold in the blue sky clear,The wind will whisper..come with me, please..The Stars, the Wind, and the Single Tear..When the physical world becomes indistinct,Reason grows dim and disappears,Sorrow...Anger...Love...no longer linked,The Stars, the Wind, and no more Fears..When the wind whispers in the dark trees,With the moon and stars alone,Dark lake stirred only by the breeze,The Stars, the Wind, and the Unknown..The heart that once was full of tears,With the silence, learns to see,The Dark is what the Raven wears,But Light alone makes it free...</marquee>

There's nothing inherently wrong with episodes that don't contribute to the main plot, as long as they contribute something worthwhile. Unfortunately, there are some eps in TU ("No Need for Resident Officers", for example) that don't contribute anything other than an extra half-hour of length for the series.

The REAL Happy Couple

It's fair to say that Tenchi Universe was not without it's faults.

The fact that the rag-tag group were able to so easily evade the Jurai military AND the Galaxy Police was something that particularly ruined it for me. I mean, Yagami must have been the fastest ship in the Universe or something...

Still, that's not to say it didn't have high-points.
The Time and Space Adventures saga was great, and an interesting way of developing characters - well, interesting, but still very lazy.
The last four or so episodes had some great drama and tension, but if you're leaving it that late in the day to properly develop a storyline then you're going to have to be...
'No Need for a Checkpoint' is abcolutely hilarious - say no more.
And 'No Need for an Escape' has some fantastic characterisation and tension - a pity we couldn't have seen a little more of Kiyone's deadly serious side than the glimpses we were given here. Pity the episode is ruined by just about everything that happened after Kiyone's "shoot out" with Mitsuki...

But, such highs are not enough to redeem it for totally bastardising the characters of Ryoko, Ayeka, Mihoshi and Washu.

They did a good job with Noboyuki though...
---------------------

"Was it the riches of the land, powers of bright darkness, who lead the noble to the East, to fight the heathens... International security, the call of the righteous man, needs a reason to kill man... War, we don't speak any more of war..." - System of a Down

Why not take a trip to "Substitute Tenchi"!

Hmm....I think it added a side of Ryoko that the OAV has yet to show. (No Need for Ryoko)

Sometimes it's Darkest just before Dawn.

<marquee>When the cold dark waves on the shores break,With a clouded pale moon foretelling death,Stand by the shores of the endless lake,The Stars, the Wind, and the Last Breath..When time stands still near the dark trees,With the stars so cold in the blue sky clear,The wind will whisper..come with me, please..The Stars, the Wind, and the Single Tear..When the physical world becomes indistinct,Reason grows dim and disappears,Sorrow...Anger...Love...no longer linked,The Stars, the Wind, and no more Fears..When the wind whispers in the dark trees,With the moon and stars alone,Dark lake stirred only by the breeze,The Stars, the Wind, and the Unknown..The heart that once was full of tears,With the silence, learns to see, The Dark is what the Raven wears,But only Light makes it free. </marquee>

I agree, Ryoko sunk to her all-time low in "No Need For Hunger"!

More like, RM, it showed a side of Ryoko that, in the OAV, she doesn't have. Nevermind that it's inconsistent even with Ryoko's characterization in TU. The TU version of Ryoko I could see, at that point, being willing to ditch everybody else like that, but not Tenchi.

The REAL Happy Couple

No Need for CheckPoints is possibly the best episode except the last one. I love the voice for Nobyuki in TU. That is how I always pictured his voice shold be like.

I am the one.

I am Tsunami's apprentice.

I am one of the few

able to produce

10 Light Hawk Wings!!

Now I didn't say there weren't faults in the TV series, just that I don't pay attention to them that much, lol.

"Love is a battlefield..."
