In what way? The problem was that they tried to change too much, plot, story, characters, artwork, everything. Except for the character names, STM has no other similarities with the previous Tenchi material. There was character development in Shin Tenchi? Making all the characters, right from the very start, virtually unrecognizable in terms of personality does not constitute character development. It constitutes character butchery. And the plot, while not as generic as TU's, was far worse in terms of execution. A super-powered child out for revenge as the main villain isn't a bad idea, but the 1-dimensional nature of the characters and the overall poor writing wrecked the story. The artwork was another thing that perterbed me. he faces of the characters didn't have "the anime tang" feeling to it like OVA and even Universe had. The eyes were esp. bad, when a character whould turn their head, the eye would flatten out and so would their face.
