Post subject: Tenchi Series Review for Newbie Otaku

Greetings all!

I know that I have only been here for a few days and some of you know Tenchi! pretty well. However, I have noticed a lot of people quoting different episodes of completely seperate series as if they were part of the same storyline.

It just bugs me. -_^

So, as a service to all those people who 'kinda' know about the wonders of Tenchi Muyo!, I have decided to go through a series rundown. I hope this helps people get things straight!

=P

Different Tenchi stories. All of the following are completely seperate from the rest. I put all of the stories/movies that belong to a particular incarnation of Tenchi in their repective groups.

_____________
#1 Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki:

The original OAV (Episodes 1-6)

Night Before the Carnival (Ep 7)

OAV 2 (Episodes 7-13, 14 if you count the extra bit that previews series 3)

Mihoshi Special (Side story, may not be completely true)

Daughter of Darkness (Side, future story, may not be true.
People argue if this is actually part of the series)

Tenchi Muyo! GXP (Side story with background for upcominc OAV3)

OAV 3 (Not out yet)

Tenchi Muyo Novels (Written by the director of the series, technically a novelization of all three parts of the OAV, including what might happen next. Only in Japanese)

Tenchi Muyo! Manga (Sometimes called 'No Need For Tenchi', this follows directly after OAV1. It is technically part of the OAV, but is more of an extended side story. Some argue if it really applies)
________________

_________________
#2 Tenchi Muyo! (Tenchi Universe)

Over 20 episodes aired in 95(?). A complete remake of the series from scratch. All the characters are still there with slightly altered origins and exaggerated personalities. A good story, but not Part of the OAV.

Tenchi Muyo in Love (Tenchi the Movie)
Another good story involving going into the past to save Tenchi's mother (who is called Achika in this version).

Tenchi Forever (Tenchi Movie 3)
Tenchi dissappears for a while and the girls try to recue him from wherever he went. Last thing to be made by this director and the last of the 'Universe' series.
__________________

___________________
#3 Shin Tenchi (Tenchi in Tokyo)

Another full season of episodes of the characters remade yet again by a different director. Everybody is even more exaggerated than in 'Universe' and the series is a lot more 'childlike' than the others, relying on slapstick and character villianization. Most people who consider themselves 'hardcore' Tenchi fans basically ignore the existence of this series because of the gross changes made to the characters and inane plot.
_____________________

_____________________
#4 Pretty Sammy OAV

Three episodes and fun as hell. Different world where Sasami and tenchi are brother and sister (Their mother is a blonde voice actress wannabe. I loooove her). The series was made completely for fun.
_____________________

_____________________
#5 Pretty Sammy TV (Magical Project S?)

Tv treatment of the Pretty Sammy idea. Again another story. Suprisingly, even though billed as a kids show, it is extremely good (and funny).
_____________________

_____________________
#6 Tenchi Muyo Comics

A few comics that were released in the US (only) back in the nineties. They sucked. Don't ever buy them.
_____________________

_____________________
#7 Tenchi Novels

I know I mentioned them above, but there are different ones out. The three 'True' Tenchi novles by Kajishima are the OAV, but there are at least 15 other books written by various authors, some of which worked with Kajishima, that are side stories and possible alternate universes. Interesting...if I ever get my Japanese to that level. =P
______________________

Well, that is the basic rundown of things in the Tenchi multiverse. Remember, while these stories all have the same characters and similar plotlines, they are completely seperate. You may like them all or just one of them, but crossing is a big no-no.

Example:
Someone said in a thread that Kiyone liked Tenchi because she said something to the effect in 'Tenchi in Tokyo'. IF you are talking about that series, then yes she likes him, but if you go anywhere else, You run into a big problem. She technically doesn't exist in the OAV (her name was probably simply used by Mihoshi for her story. Kiyone is the name of Tenchi's mother), unless of course you count 'Daughter of Darkness'. In the 'Universe' series she never even showed a remote interest. Same in the different Pretty Sammy worlds and Tenchi novels (so far as I know).

Example:
Bloodlines.
In the OAV, Washu is Ryoko's mother. Aeka and Yosho are half brother/sister.
In the TV, Ryoko and Washu never met before. Aeka and Yosho simply share a Juraian heritage and are not even of the same family.
In Tokyo, Ryoko and Washu were partners in crime. Aeka and Katsuhito (not Yosho here) don't even know each other at all.
In Pretty Sammy (TV), Ryoko and Washu are only side characters who never even meet. I don't even remember Yosho and Aeka is a bad guy from another dimension (Jurai doesn;t even exist).

Example:
Ryo-Ohki
OAV she is a ship created by Washu for Ryoko.
TV she is just Ryoko's ship.
Tokyo she is Sasami's 'pet' that can change into a ship and other things.
Pretty Sammy Ryo-Ohki is Sammy's magical sidekick.

I don't mean to shove this down anyone's throat, but everytime I see a misconceived comment on the boards I just get the urge to correct it (even though some of them are years old) or pop someone in the mouth.

=)

I hope this helped some people out.

Feel free to add any comments and, if I am wrong, PLEASE correct me. I hate to be spouting off like this only to have incorrect information.

Thanks for listening to me ramble.

See you on the boards,
Plok

May she rest in peace. I was there, When Ms.Koch told us I lost it. I went home, the dreams haven't gone away. We lost one of our family that night. I have never seen a group of people walk away that sadly.
