Am I the only one who feels that a little too much is made of off-screen events in the OAV? Just seems to me that very little of this has ever come up in the series itself... Damn confusing.

Most things came up in the True Tenchi novels and some more has come up in 100 things you didn't know about Tenchi. Both official!

Things can be official, but non-canonical. Has it ever been stated that the novels and other things won't ever be contradicted on-screen?

I don't know. I do know that a lot of elements from the novels were used in GXP, though. Not directly stated, but they were made by the creator with the original idea and image in his mind, so I would say that that would make them one with the show. The show was also made with the original idea in mind.

But then how long ago were the novels written? People's ideas can change radically over time. If Kajishima decides he'd rather do things differently when writing the OAV continuation, will he allow his previously published books to stand in the way of the development of his creation?

I may be wrong but I think they were created before the series. But there has been hints in most of the storylines of the True Tenchi novels being connected to the series.
