So basically, if you download the show and like it make damn sure you buy it later to support the creators and the possible continuation of the show.

Basically, you will need to download and install a BitTorrent client. Then you will need to go back to the hosting site and click on the torrent link to activate the client and begin downloading.

Post subject: What about this fact...
PostPosted: Sat Oct 25, 2003 3:08 pm
True Sheol, I think that you are missing a pretty big fact when it comes to anime downloading. And that is how many people would honestly know that the product out there even exists if it wasn't for anime downloading and file sharing? How many people have ever heard of most of these anime titles that haven't been brought to the U.S. and in alot of cases never will. Its not like we are seeing advertisements for these anime products in the US. The point I am trying to make is this - If there wasn't anime downloading/filesharing people wouldn't even know that the product out there exists let alone buy it. People are not willing to buy a product when they have know idea what it is. In the long haul anime downloading creates more sales in the long run, then if there wasn't any anime downloading in the first place. Yes, you are going to have those people who don't spend a dime on DVD etc... and there are going to be some missed sales because of it, but all of the new sales that are being generated because of file sharing and anime downloading are going to more then make up the difference in possible lost sales.

First, most people aren't randomly downloading titles. They actually do read or hear about the anime online or through friends and THEN they search for them. People usually know that the product exists when they download it. Plug "anime" into Kazaa and you'll turn up a LOT of junk. A lot of it isn't even anime.

Second, this isn't like lending your region 2 DVDs to a friend, because once the files are out there, you have no chance of getting them 'back'. Even if the anime gets licensed. Even if it gets dubbed. Even if it becomes one of the popular shows out there. Even if it's on the Cartoon Network, Tech TV, or some other outlet. Even if it can be rented or ordered online.

Third, do you go to a movie theatre and ask to watch the full movie before deciding to pay for it? Do you go to a movie store and ask for them to tape a copy of a show for you so that you can decide whether you want to rent or buy a copy? Probably not, right? You rely upon advertsing, previews, reviews by movie critics, and the opinions of others who have seen the show.

Fact is, if you can download anime, you can find fan sites that have REVIEWS and OPINIONS about the show. You can find art and screen-captures. You can go to message boards and chat rooms to discuss a show. If it's licensed, you can go to a website in your language that contains information on it. It is the general, non-connected public that needs increased awareness of a show. That is what anime-specialty stores and anime conventions are for. That is what anime clubs are for.

If you actually READ what I've written, you'll see that I acknowledged the role that fansubs have had aided the publicizing of animation in general. However, it's not the unrestricted propogation of fansubs to the general population that makes fansubs so helpful. It's those fans who watch the fansub and decide to publicize the show, spending their own time and money to find and collect information, then share that knowledge with others.

The vast majority of anime-watchers simply consume the shows without contributing anything to the community at large. They watch it and perhaps buy it if they like it or not. If it's available Anime fansites probably put more money in the industry than anything else because they help create the demand that motivates companies to license the shows.

Fansubs are not that effective at boosting anime sales, in and of themselves. If DVD-quality rips become the standard, I think that they'll be detrimental to the industry as a whole. It will always be the dedicated fan that drives publicizing of a show, not the fansub. Fansubs should be directed towards 'finding' their respective fans who will publicize the show. They shouldn't be intended for mass-consumption as a replacement product like bootlegs. They should never replace the show.

I spent some time on the FoT IRC channel and read comments by someone complaining about the framerate and quality in the fansub. Nevermind that it wasn't costing that person anything. Nevermind that fansubs aren't supposed to replace the product. That person had the audacity to expect a fansub that would probably be comparable to my Region 2 DVD. Yet, from the comments that I have read from those who have seen it, the fansub's picture quality is actually pretty good. Sadly enough, those kind of people are becoming all too common. Many fansub groups are coming under pressure to provide high-quality fansubs. Quality that isn't necessary to see if you'll like a show. Quality that makes purchasing the DVD pretty darn redundant for most people. There's a point where fansubbing is nothing more than piracy, no matter what the expressed intent is.

Edited by: True Sheol at: 10/25/03 4:11 pm

Here is an idea, request some of the main anime translaters and distributers to advertise at the movies and on broadcast, and when you do, suggest a theme, maybe something like a rebelion or a conflict with a strong cause for a theme. Suggest a tone of rebelion and a desire to be more then a kids show that has shallow charactor development and a bland easy to predict story line. This should be a good suggestion sense most american cartoons are mostly shallow and imported and translated anime that is distributed has a much higher quality to it, even when it is corny and/or kiddified.

Here is a list of e-mail addresses that have the most promiss.

Johnpp@tokyopop.com
sales@advfilms.com
sales@bandai-ent.com
Feedback@pioneeranimation.com
advertising@theanimenetwork.com

Oh and be professional and think things through about your e-mail you send. A controvertail subject may attract too much attention. "Keeper of Hells Gate" and "True Sheol" got into a debait about piracy, and sense that is a sore subject, that is one thing that you would not want to bring up.

I'm not calling any one stupid, just saying not to rush to making an e-mail request and let this be one of those times where you may want to put in just a little extra effort. Nothing fancy, just something with good mesure.
