OK, I've been thinking and hashing this out with other people (who don't post online), and we have agreed that in Puni Puni Poemy, the character "K" is a dig at him. He tries to take control of the story by first, killing the director, Watanabe, and then later, killing the scriptwriter, Kuroda. His parents are aliens, unbeknownst to him, until they reveal it to him(even though they are octopus looking things(from a game, I think), and he is shocked...). The heroine of the story has a great crush on him and throws herself at him; but he shows no interest in her or any other woman. He does, however, kidnap all the female characters for his own use... I know, this fits a little too well into my theory of the new direction of TM anime, and Puni Puni Poemy does mock all types of anime(I think Pretty Sammy was one of the Magical Girls getting her butt kicked at the opening)...but this is just too coincidental to not bring up as a conspiracy theory. Both Watanabe and Kuroda have a history with the TM franchise. any thoughts? ann |

Maybe it's a remark of respect, shows how great he is if people are willing to exploit him for cheap laughs. The thing with anime is that there seems to be a limited number of formats, a limited number of formats spirils out into cliché. You either bog yourself down into complacency or you attack the thing that is trying to define you. The blame ulimately lies with producers, these days they are less likely to go for fresh ideas these days for fearing their own jobs. I really wish they would just take the risk! </rant> |

K-sensei had nothing to do with anything Pretty Sammy, so any jabs Watanabe made in Puni Puni Poemi at that anime shouldn't be seen as jabs at K-sensei. Further, Puni Puni Poemi was released in 2001. Watanabe went on to direct Tenchi Muyo! GXP, which is a K-sensei production and was released a year later. So I don't see how Watanabe's working with K-sensei on GXP would have had any impact. Kuroda-sensei has worked with Kajishiam-sensei for years, so maybe that came from that. I can see your theory though. Since Kuroda-sensei continued to work with K-sensei AND Watanabe came in for GXP, if it were a jab at K-sensei, he took it well. ^_^ Still, while K-sensei is a prima donna, its because he has a story and hates it when the director or script writer make changes to his story. Well, it's been a LONG time since I saw Puni Puni Poemi and having seen it once, I had no desire to see it again. |
