Post subject: Tenchi and King Arthur?

Hey all...man It's been ages since I posted here o.o;

I was searching around google when I came upon a rather interesting read. I would link to the site but it's down so I'll just post what it said.

A Comparison of Tenchi Muyo! to Arthurian Legend

By Samantha Copeland

It struck me after watching part of the "Tenchi OAV" series and having recently reread "The Merlin Trilogy" that there were a few uncanny similarities between the Tenchi stories and those of King Arthur's early life.

Tenchi's grandfather is Yosho, son of the King of Juri, but is living incognito in a shrine, and has no wish of becoming the next king. Tenchi is unaware of this connection until Kagato comes to kidnap Ryoko, and this scene is almost straight out of "The Sword in the Stone" (even if that title was the result of a mistranslation, which should have been "Sword from a Saxon" . When Tenchi found out who he really is, pulled the sword out of the tree, and was called the Crown Prince of Juri, bells went off! This was almost the same as the scene in the Disney feature where "Wart" (Arthur) pulled the sword out of the anvil. Sir Ector came forward to reveal that he was not his father, but had been given him to foster, then hailed the boy as King. (O.K., minus a big "Star Wars" worthy sequence, light sabres indeed!).

Tenchi Arthur

Another interesting bit, in "Merlin Trilogy", Merlin was the illegitimate son of Ambrosius, first king of a United Britain. Merlin had grown up ignorant of his who is father was. Later when he met his father, discussions of the succession arose over Merlin vs. Uther, Ambrosius' younger brother. Merlin stated that he had no interest in ruling, but would help Uther any way he could. Ambrosius said that he thought that between the two of them they could make a good king. This is a bit reminiscent of Yosho leaving Juri in a war with no intention of returning because of the potential rivalry between himself and Ayeka. Uther's womanizing reminds me of Nobiyuki's "Peeping Tom" antics. The fact that Tenchi's father and grandfather team up to raise Tenchi reminds me of the "making a good king together" phrase.

After Uther had become King, Merlin was asked to help bring Uther to the Lady Ygrainne/Igranne, wife of the Duke of Cornwall. Merlin assisted in this deed, and the product of that mission was Arthur. On this same night, the Duke was killed in battle. Because of the controversy surrounding the birth and the Duke's death, Arthur was given to Merlin's for fostering. Merlin entrusted the baby to Sir Ector who had been a loyal friend of Ambrosius'. The boy was raised in ignorance of who he was and who the wise man at the shrine was. This person gave Arthur and Cei (Sir Ector's son) lessons. Although Tenchi knew his "wise man" was his grandfather, he did not know about his royal lineage. Both Arthur and Tenchi received many lessons that probably contributed to their fairness in dealings with others.

When Uther was dying, Arthur was sent for, and was only just acknowledged as heir before Uther died. Merlin then took the entire court from the feast hall to a nearby shrine where the Sword of Mithras (AKA Excalibur or Caliburn) was encased in a holy fire on a stone altar. All present witnessed Arthur removing the sword and then accepted him as their sovereign. This is almost exactly what happened after Yosho's little fight with Kagato, at the end of the fight, the sword was stuck in the tree, and Tenchi was able to pull it out. Kagato had tried, but since he was "an unsuitable owner" of the sword, he was zapped by the power of the sword. Merlin had threatened a similar fate if a person that was not the king tried to take the sword off of the altar.

Since it's been a while since I watched the Tenchi II film (Daughter of Darkness), I'm just gonna say this, with Tenchi's daughter being the puppet of those would do away with him, don't you just think, "Hey, isn't that what Mordred did to Arthur". Mordred being Arthur's son by his (half) sister, whom he did not know until he reached adulthood.

In general, since there are multiple Tenchi series OAV and TV, that this was also a lot like Arthurian Legend. The OAV and TV, although they have many different storylines, there are many common threads that can link the two together. In Arthurian, there are many legends from other sources, Thomas Mallory's "Morte D'Arthur", Mary Stewart's "Merlin Trilogy" ("Crystal Cave", "Hollow Hills", "Last Enchantment", and their sequel "The Wicked Day" , T.H. White's "Sword in the Stone", and countless others. Although many have different names or slightly different relationships between characters, some stories from both continuities when broken down sound like the same story.
---------------

My DeviantART gallery freakin-Socrates

Some interesting comparisons. How popular is Disney in Japan? I think the theme park is doing very well. I don't know about the movies.

"which should have been "Sword from a Saxon"
I didn't know this.
