Neelick talked to Matt K. Miller about it a little while ago. Funimation had contacted him but they didn't want to pay him as much so he didn't take it.

Formerly Known as SSJ_Trunks.

Catch Chrono Trigger As It Should've Been. Triggered

I like DVD cuz you can switch between the dub and the subtitled. If I'm geared up to watch anime I usually like to watch the Subtitled, but if I'm just watching it while falling asleep I like the dubbed cuz my eyes are half shut anyway.

Well the information I've got about the third OAV. I did speak to Matt K. Miller at a recent anime convention (He's a cool guy btw I played pool with him in the hotel bar). Anyway, he said that his agent was contacted by Funimation and they offered him much less money than he usually gets.

Petrea Burchard said that she wasn't even contacted. I have to talk to her again to see if they tried again. She's also great IRL too. She's close friends with Matt as well they talk fondly of each other.

Jay Hopper, the Guy who did the voice of Noboyuki is not doing voice acting from what I've heard. He's a college professor now who occasionally breaks into anime characters while doing lectures

From what I've heard, Debi Derryberry is focusing on her character of Jimmy Neutron. I'm not certain she'll be doing anime anytime soon.

Anyway, that's what I've heard of Funimation's attempt to get the voice crew back together. On the other hand, Funimation has been redeeming itself somewhat. I spoke to somebody who said they did a very good job dubbing the GXP series.

I havent' seen the GXP yet because I haven't figured out if I bought volume 2 or 1 yet. I guess I can do that now actually. I was convinced I bought 2 and wan't going to watch it til I bought volume one but this weekend I saw volume 1 and I think I have it. Its so confusing they have almost the same cover art.

Anyway so there it is. I don't think that Funimation is going to get the origional cast together in its entirety but I hope they can choose a good cast.

Also a guy I've met at anime conventions who goes by the name "Pocky" has gotten a job as a translator at ADV. He's a devoted anime fan and it makes me happy to see anime fans doing the work on anime instead of people just trying to earn a paycheck.

"God's in his heaven and all is right with the world"
- Nerv
Tenchi Muyo, No Need for a Homepage

Yeah he was pretty cool. We were in the hotel bar playing pool. I see him come in and was like cool. But didn't want to bother him cuz that was his time to spend. He wasn't on a panel or anything.

Anyway so he comes over and asks if he can play. I like it when you meet people who are famous or at least semi-famous and they're cool.

"God's in his heaven and all is right with the world"
- Nerv
Tenchi Muyo, No Need for a Homepage

*sigh* OK, let ANB-sensei educate the masses.

I) Pioneer's Translations.

Pioneer's original translations of TM!R are full of errors and added stuff, and that's in the subtitled version. What do I mean? A few examples.

A) Pioneer translated "kaa-chan" (mommy) as grandma. Apparently, they heard "baa-chan". This is a little, tiny error, yet in regards to the story, it makes a HUGE difference. The death of Tenchi's mother is what had such a great impact on his life. He only just met his grandma Airi-san in episode 15.

B) In the scene where Sasami-chan has just released Tenchi, he looks her over, sees the critter and says "kawaii ne". Sasami blushes. So what did Tenchi say? I'm told this can be translated to "(You're) cute" (the "you're" is understood) or "how cute". So why does Sasami-chan blush? Because even though she knows the remark is directed to the critter, for an instant, she imagines Tenchi-niichan is saying it to her. This is where we get the first indication of Sasami's attraction to Tenchi.

In the Pioneer translation, Tenchi says, "That's a cute pet." Now we know that Tenchi is directing the remark to the critter, but he doesn't specify it in the original Japanese. Thus, when the English script has him specify it, we lose the Sasami reaction. Now why is she blushing? Is she suddenly shy about having a cute pet? By inserting what wasn't said, the nature of the conversation has shifted. It is a small thing, but in TM!R, little things end up meaning a lot.

C) I don't have to original Japanese here (sorry about that), but in episode 13, Aeka sees Funaho and learns her mother is down there. Aeka has a reaction of "Oh crap!" She rushes down the mountain and comes into the house. What she says (translated) when she sees her mother AND Ryoko is, "Just as I feared..." What did she fear? She knew that Ryoko was in the house and she knows how her mother is. Thus she was afraid that her mother and Ryoko would have already met and thus Ryoko would have another thing to hold over Aeka's head. Making the best of what she considers a bad situation, she warns Ryoko not to say anything.

In the official Pioneer version, Aeka comes to the house and says, "There you are!" What? She already knew her mother was in the house, but it appears the English script writers felt she should make some asinine statement upon seeing her mother. Again, the nature of the conversation is lost thanks to Pioneer's playing loose & free with the translations.

And there are tons more examples, but unfortunately most who know don't have the time (or wish not to take the time) to correct these mistakes or poor translations.

To be fair to Pioneer, they did fix the worst errors when they re-released TM!R, but they left in what they consider to be the "harmless" stuff.

II) FUNimation Translations

A) The dubs for FUNimation are over-domesticated. FUNimation gears their dubs to attempt to appeal to a wider audience who doesn't care about Japanese stuff or accuracy in the dub providing they are entertained. So FUNimation makes stuff up (as seen in the 4th GXP DVD where they have Ryo-ohki speak English rather than meow) or the like. Of the 80% of anime fans who prefer the dubs to subs, the majority of these folks don't care about that, so FUNi continues to do it.

B) That said, the "Japanese Subtitle" provided by FUNimation are very accurate while still being very understandable. They also include all Japanese honorifics except the "-neesama/-neesan/-neechan" or "-niisama/-niisan/-niichan". So kiss "Little Washu" goodbye and say hello to "Washu-chan".

FUNimation goes a step farther for "Yu Yu Hakusho". Their Japanese Subs for it are like fansubs in that they include a lot of fun Japanese terms like "youkai" and "youki", and all of the Japanese attack names.

So props to FUNimation for their English subs (called "Japanese Subs" on your DVD though) but no props for their dubs.
----------------
Tenchi Muyo!
