Remember the scene where the girls are told Mayuka is the future child of Tenchi and they all imagine they are the mother? It plays very differently in the novel and in the book. In the novel, the original, by Hasegawa who created Kiyone -- she joined in with the blushing and imagining she was the mother. In the movie, she told the other girls that they were too young to think of such things and was replaced by Mihoshi as the third girl blushing.

(Also notice that they are wearing the exact same clothes...)

Not too surprising... but the question is, why not Kiyone in the movie too?

In the Magical Girl Pretty Sammy series, Kiyone was always presented as very shy when it comes to men, but that wasn't ever really explored in any of the regular Tenchi material. It's too bad because many believe Kiyone is a good match for Tenchi personality-wise. I believe even Mr. K admitted the same even though he didn't create Kiyone himself (but correct me if I'm wrong on that note).

I was always confused on the the second movie. Can't tell what timeline its in.

Hasegawa-sensei created that Kiyone. Kajishima did do her character design though for the Mihoshi Special as I understand it.

besides the moment in 'daughter of darkness'' (which to me seems like a mistake in the scripting)
Kiyone's never shown any interest in tenchi or having a boyfriend. that blush she displays
is really off character for her and like i said; it really seems like an error to me that wasn't corrected.

the only motive she ever displays on any of the series that she's in is that same 'promotion/career orientation'
one. besides that she has the other 'escape from mihoshi' motive.
but those two are basicly it.

i do agree that she would make a rather good match for tenchi though;
as they are both the realistic and serious types.

Not to get too off topic from Kiyone but someone brought up TiT and it just hit me to post,
but TiT's writer kinda hijacked a few ideas from MnE, for instance

while this isnt entirely a writer idea, both Sakuya and Mayuka were voiced by the same English VA

there names are only spelled different by the first letter (and in the case of Yugi and Youzuha, both start with Y)

there hair is similar (mayuka's being a slightly lighter blue, and tails in the back but the front is virtually the same as Sakuya)

They are both controlled by a child figure, of whom they are blood related

at the end of the stories there is the "grow up into" the person being controlled

both kiss Tenchi (as i get one-up'd by all the girls in the house, lol)

Those are just a few things that i feel have to be put down by more then just coincidence, as they resemble each other significantly
