This film was quite possibly the most heart wrenching thing I've had to watch.
And thats not just out of the TM franchise, i mean generally in anime.

I've only watched this film once and ive never watched it since.
It makes me feel so sad.

Well i favorited the amv, gotta say, from not ever actually have listened to Sonata Arctica, i'm now a fan because of this video

Anywho, Tenchi Muyo In Love 2 (Tenchi Forever) is my favorite of the 3 movies, because it took the Tenchi series to a place its never gone before, to a sad, depressing story where theres never a cheery moment. But it also gave depth to the characters that they've never had before, and the story, man, probably the best thats ever come out of Tenchi, no it wasnt the OVA, no it wasnt the first movie, it was this one. Depressing is the right word for it though, from Yosho and Haruna coming to Earth, to Ryoko and Aeka desperately looking for Tenchi and always coming up short. As a Ryoko fan, we finally get what we've somewhat been waiting for , it may only be the last 5 minutes of the movie, but for me, if it wasnt for the fact that Universe's ending is untoppable, this one would be my number one

I've watched it a few times, but nothing beats the first time, that first time sums it up

I'm with you Dagon, it may be sad but it definitely branched the series out in an interesting direction. It had the most serious tone and it was refreshing to see some of the characters acting slightly different. For example Ayeka and Ryoko holding down jobs in Tokyo to try to find Tenchi. I've only seen all the movies once though, I just added the three disc movie set to my collection yesterday and watched them all in a row today. I'd say Daughter of Darkness (manatsu no eve, spelling?) was my least favorite one. It hurt to see Ryoko get slapped =(.

Tenchi Forever was depressing to me in the way that TU was, just even more. Instead of building upon TMiL1, a good film, it took all the bad aspect of every previous series and mangled into that.

-Grandpa's previous problem follow Tenchi. That's novel. Not like that didn't happen in OAV1, MnE, and TU.
-Tenchi gets a Grandpa's old lover and boinks her. Wow. Family relations.
-All the girls besides Ayeka/Ryoko get quickly pushed to the side. f!@# you Negishi>.> In fact, it should be called Sasami-Washu-Mihoshi-Kiyone Muyo (No need for), because they weren't needed in the plot. Just relegated to unimportant extra status like one of Yugi's dull minions.
-Really crappy art style. People call it "mature" :-/

-Fanbois claim it's a Tenchi/Ryoko film just because of Tenchi's one spoken line. Actions speak louder than words. He got wetnsloppy with Whoruna, kissed her a lot, hugged her.... and Ryoko got... nothing? That's the type of T/R it is.
-I hated Tenchi's clothing sense - yuppie artist with Haruna and baggy pants slacker at the end. I'm surprised he wasn't wearing a baseball cap backwards and started rapping K-Fed tunes. Very far from the earnest and simple clothes he wore in the OAV. He acted and looked like a douchebag. The girls have more self-respect than to go out with this loser.

Only good thing to come out of Tenchi Forever was Eternal Memory. But I'm not sure I want Sasami to get Whoruna's sloppy seconds. Ryoko can have this spineless, yuppie TU wonder while Sasami gets the brave, earnest and simple yet wonderful OAV Tenchi:D

To be fair, I didn't read the SPK's OP going in because I was going purely by the title of the thread:
"Tenchi Muyo in Love II (Tenchi Forever) - Depressing"

So I thought it was about what we didnt like about TMiL2, not something elseXD
