For years, the only free online translation was Babelfish. It was okay, but seemed to translate everything literally and made a lot of babble. I only discovered it recently, but Google Translate Here is And here is It's not perfect, but compare the two especially in the item description and reviews of the product by people. And unlike Yahoo with nearly all its services like babelfish or yahoo mail, which seem never to be touched again once done, google seems to be actively working everything they have over time -- so these translations will improve even further. Google states its goal will be to "combine its translation tool with image analysis, allowing a person to, say, take a cellphone photo of a menu in German and get an instant English translation." That means, before long, no more expensive OCR software either. And before any translation group gets off the ground, I'm willing to bet that by the end of the year, you can take the existing scans of the Hasegawa or Kajishima Novels/Doujin floating around - and get a moderately good translation for nothing. If the groups feel like it, they can probably polish the translation in 1/10 of the time. |
