In open battle; Samurai.<br><br>They outnumber the Ninja obviously.<br><br>But in stealth and secret missions or one on one, I would favor Ninja. Wait-wait-wait-wait-wait-WAIT.<br><br>You're having a discussion about Ninjas and you haven't yet deferred to ME? Shame on all of you.<br><br>Anyway. Before I begin, that whole Last Samurai ninja scene doesn't count. If more than three ninjas are ever used in a single operation, they count as one big ninja and thus lose a key part of their abilities--stealth. One-on-one...hm.<br><br>First of all, samurai armor wasn't meant to protect from blades at all--it was largely defensive against arrows, to help the samurai die nobly on the battlefield as opposed to being killed by a nameless peasant archer. So the advantage of being armored can be largely discounted, save for the fact that it may restrict the samurai's movements somewhat.<br><br>Given that, it comes down to who can swing the sword vs. who can dodge more effectively. The art of kenjutsu is largely based upon large, powerful strikes and uses a lot of parrying and blocking. The ninja sword art, however, uses multiple quick strikes and tries to avoid sword-to-sword contact(this comes more from equipment than ability--the ninja-to was often more effective as a tool than a weapon, and always poorer in quality than a katana). Since one focuses on hitting and the other on dodging, we have another draw.<br><br>However--the ninja-to was not the only weapon at a ninja's disposal. Shuriken, kusari-gama, poisoned needles, smoke bombs...the list goes on and on. Given the sheer versatility of a ninja's arsenal, they have quite an advantage.<br><br>End result--I have to give it to the ninja. Not out of bias, of course. <p></p><i></i>

I think I disagree with you NAN. First as you said the Armour of samurai was designed to deflect arrows only, and so was extremely light and easy to move in, any movement restriction would be negligible. However it would help protect against any ranged weapon the ninja might have (of course this assumes the ninja isn't firing from a distance with good accuracy and thus able to aim for an unprotected area, but if this were the case I would hardly be an face to face battle :b). The Ninjato really isn't designed to fight another sword as you said so the samurai would have the advantage here, as well as the fact katana styles are designed to combat other people with a swords etc. If they had two kama that would probably be a better bet, but I don't really think of kama as ninja weapons, plus a good katana would probably take them apart. I donÂ’t know anything about a kusarigama fighting style so I can only speculate, but in close combat I would thinks its main use would be as a kama.<br><br>All in all a Ninja's style is designed for stealth and in an open fight this advantage would be lost, while a samurai would be in his element.
