or so they say...at least one of my teachers...thoughts?
___________________________________________________________________
If the above post contains anything that seems remotely offending, I'll let you know I put it there with a reason :P. While all humans share genetic traits and have common ancestry in the remote past...that is a very very ignorant statement.

Inbreeding is breeding between very closely related members of the same family (1st cousins and closer). That statement made by your "teacher" implies that close relations are breeding amongst themselves over and over again over the centuries, and that this is what made (I assume) migrant Chinese turn into Japanese. This is, of course, NOT the case, since cultural prohibitions in Japan (as elsewhere) forbid close relations from legally marrying one another. Further, to make a statement like that is disgustingly foolish. If generations of Chinese should produce offspring by having close sexual relationships among family members--starting from now and going on for several centuries--by that "teacher's" statement, this produces Japanese, right? Of course not. It is cultural and historical changes that most strongly define one's ethnicity, not simple genetics. Japanese and Chinese are different; by history, culture, language, tradition etc. One cannot make the distinctions based from physical characteristics/ genetics alone. That's utterly ridiculous.

For your "teacher" to make such a statement is not only ignorant, but shows a severe lack of cultural understanding and discretionary judgement on his/her part.

~ZL

www.wsu.edu:8080/~dee/ANCJAPAN/YAYOI.HTM

Even if he is talking about immigration from the continent into Japan, he's still off. The (later @3rd Century B.C.) immigrants (of Ancient Japan) had origins NORTH of China (see Yayoi), so they weren't even ethnic Chinese that crossed over into Japan. Again, what makes a person Chinese or Japanese depends FAR MORE on culture and tradition than genetic makeup. I am not saying you cannot physically tell who is Japanese apart from who is Chinese...over centuries by living in certain areas of the world physical changes do take place among humans. However, saying that one ethnic group can suddenly turn into another solely by genetics (and especially through inbreeding) is just stupid.

*Aside: Hey! The link I gave is from my alma mater (where I did my undergraduate work). Cool!!! Thank you ZL! And Tonto, be sure to show ZL's post to that person that calls themself a "teacher." I'd also like to note, aside from joking around ( and even then in this case jokes like that should NOT be made. ), that telling students lies or incorrect infromation is not teaching.

P.S. Thanks for that link ZL. I'm going to read it next time I have some free time.

When you're in a town like this all covered with smoke,
you forget that there's a world outside.
Nothing amazing happens here.
And you get used to that,
used to a world where everything is ordinary.
Every day we spend here is like a whole lifetime of dying slowly.

|

I think that the Japanese have a large enough gene pool to support a viable culture. They were isolated on the Japanese islands for a long time but you can't really say that they're imbred.

"God's in his heaven and all is right with the world"
- Nerv
Tenchi Muyo, No Need for a Homepage
|

Impressive way of clearing that up. The Japanese and Chinese are very different. Perhaps they were thinking of the Chinese and Taiwanese.

|
