"wa" doesnt mean is or am. "da/desu/de" means is/am. (or Iru/imasu, aru/arimasu, they mean "exist" as well)

Wa is just the subject marker in the sentence although they do seem to miss out the verb alot and say things like "Tenchi wa doko?" instead of Tenchi wa doko da?"
