| Post subject: | Chrono Cross: Completed at last! |
Wow. After 40 hours of play following christmas (conforming nearly exactly to Skinbone's "2-3 week" schedule), I have finally beaten the game I thought only a month ago was "utter crap."

After watching the credits roll...I INSTANTLY got into a rant mood :D So Here I am I guess...

Now, it should be no secret that I (and many others) love Chrono Trigger. I'll allay any fears that Chrono Cross is a "bad sequel" right now, because even though it takes a LONG time to get into its CT-connections, they're more than worth the wait.

Here's what I thought about CC's pros and cons....

Characters - 7 / 10

Bleh...they really needed to put more development and back story into the majority of the cast. Since it really doesn't matter which of the 44 possible characters you choose, the game is designed to be ambiguous plot-wise. You'll never learn the nifty little details and interpersonal conflicts of an amazing, single cast like in Chrono Trigger. This is a most certain downside.

However, the cast is still fun. You know enough about side characters like Harle, and others that you can still enjoy the cast. ((My personal favorite team was Serge, Norris, and Karsh)).

The main cast itself is nicely done. Serge, Kid, and Lynx all have nice interwound backstories (I absolutely love Serge, and in the end it's hard not to love Kid as well). It's a shame character development is only really limited to them...because what they have is pretty nice.

~~~~~~~~~~
Storyline: 9 / 10
YES :D
I'll get into the Chrono Trigger connections later...but I will say here and now that CC works wonderfully by itself. It has its own unique storyline that is fun with or without playing Chrono Trigger.
Sure, there are some lowpoints...like when you just have no CLUE what to do or why you're doing something..but it all comes together in the end. Part of the reason the game's so addictive.
~~~~~~~~~~

Battle system: 10 / 10

I absolutely hated the battle system at first. It was confusing, odd, and just plain different.

Then I finally figured out exactly what the "1-2-3" attack system meant, and it was easy as hell :p

Chrono Cross, unlike most RPGs, forces you to use strategy for every single move you perform. There's none of the "ME STRONG! ME KILL!" tactics that you would perform in, say, the FF series. The concept of building up Element Levels per attack, while doing damage AT THE SAME TIME, is just lovelly.

It's hard as heck to figure out...but once you do, you'll love it.

~~~~~~~~~~
Graphics and Music: 9.5 / 10
Nearly perfect graphics, and A PERFECT soundtrack. Handsdown this is one of the better Playstation games out there for audio and visual pleasure.
The CGIs here top many other FF releases, and even seem to have their own unique flair to them. Much like Chrono Trigger did with its FF2/4 and FF3/6 brothers.
The ending theme puts many anime and real-life tracks to utter shame...
~~~~~~~~~~

Connections to Chrono Trigger: 3/10 sometimes, 9 /10 other times

As odd as this rating sounds, it's exactly that.

Chrono Cross starts out, and continues for about 20 hours of gameplay, with absolutely NOTHING even mentioned that connects it to Chrono Trigger. I can see why so many people are dissapointed, as this is just not right for a game as incredible as CT.

However, for those who give it time will be rewarded. After you reach the Dead Sea, and reach it again in the other dimension....everything comes together. And by the time TERRA TOWER comes in, it all makes wonderful, wonderful sense :D

The ending to Chrono Cross is as Chrono Trigger-influenced as anyone could want. And at the same time it's its own, unique ending affair....I have to say it was more than worth waiting 40 hours of playing.

Unfortunately, I still do have nitpicks. For instance, the fact that the main continent IS NEVER VISITED pisses me off. Chrono Cross, with a little more effort, could have been made utterly incredible if they simply did not make a corny new mainland in the form of El-Nido. This gives the game the feeling that it never will get to anything Chrono Trigger-related. Hell, it's like you're not even in the same WORLD.

Another thing, is the Masamune. They screwed around with a COOL ARSE legend from CT in Chrono Cross like there was no tomorrow. Sure, it all makes sense why and all...but it was just annoying as possible. Definitely could've done without it.

Finally, some things are implied that infuriate me beyond belief. Crono, Marle, and Lucca are all implied to be dead. WHAT THE F*CK?! I can understand Lucca's, for the shear connection she has with Kid to help the plot... but Crono and Marle?! This trio MADE Chrono Trigger. Without them, Chrono Cross seems as remote as possible at times from its predecessor.

~~~~~~~~~~
Other stuff:
The forge system is great...though at times annoying (I wish as hell I didn't have to use materials to build Rainbow equipment..IRON HARD IT IS).
The Field and Summon system is just plain bizarre, too. I have never known a task as difficult as summoning an element in Chrono Cross...and the fact that you lose Stars per summon makes it all the more difficult. It's a good thing, though, that this makes the summons EXTREMELY powerful and also makes it nearly impossible for enemies to summon in return.
~~~~~~~~~~

Overall: 8.5 or 9 out of 10

FUN AS HELL game. Highly recomended.

Still not nearly as good as Chrono Trigger...but great none the less. Loose ends such as Schala's whereabouts, as well as the final fate of Lavos, are revealed. This is a very good thing indeed...

There still exist many loose ends to take care of, though. The "entity" Robo spoke of in CT has yet to surface (there's no way in HELL it can be FATE). The details of Guardia's downfall, as well as the Melchior/Masamune connection, has yet to be cleared up as well.

Who knows? More Chrono-affair may be on the way...and if its anything like its two other games, it should be a blast.

<img border="0" src="http://ssjarena.hispeed.com/EZImages/Legatosig.jpg" alt="All people have a sanctuary which must never be touched. Bah..they went ahead and made the video game forum ;.; Ah well.

I actually didn't get Glenn...I didn't know how, and I think I'll have to try in the New Game+. You have to choose not to save Kid or something...

However, Glenn's brother...Dario...is insane. He's harder than the final boss, as well as the Gravitor and Luxator (sp?).

It made me VERY mad to find out that I "should've stolen a black plate from the Black Dragon" to beat Dario. HOW is someone supposed to know without a walkthrough?

On a side note..what exactly is up with Radical Dreamers? Is it another sequel in another dimension? Or is it just a quirk of the game?

<img border="0" src="http://ssjarena.hispeed.com/EZImages/Legatosig.jpg" alt="All people have a sanctuary which must never be touched. Radical Dreamers was the original sequel to CT...It's just an entirely text-based RPG that involves Serge, Kidd, Lynx, and Magil(later found out to be Magus)...That thing that ends with "Le Trezor interdit" is from RD.

demiforce.parodius.com/rd/tech.html

Insane. Does it "really happen" in accordance to the CT-CC storyline? Or is it really just in another dimension where the Magus of the CT-CC affair just happen to go to?

This could mean Magus' story IS NOT DONE YET...

<img border="0" src="http://ssjarena.hispeed.com/EZImages/Legatosig.jpg" alt="All people have a sanctuary which must never be touched.
