09/11/2014: I've been having problems with spambots preventing legit users from being able to sign up correctly. I've tried changing the directory from bbs to forums. Hopefully that will stop them and I can remove the retrictions stopping real users from signing up. Sorry if some of your bookmarks have become broken. They can be fixed by replacing bbs with forums in the properties.

In the Japanese newspaper Nikkei Business he revealed that it was their pride (or arrogance) that led the company to fall out with Nintendo.

He claims that when the company originally announced that Final Fantasy will be going to the Playstation back in 1997 Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi actually took it lightly, saying it "couldn't be helped".

However, Squaresoft then went on to publically diss the Nintendo 64 and amazingly convinced Enix to join the Playstation as well. Looking back he admits it wasn't a very smart move.

So it turns out Yamauchi isn't actually bitter about losing Final Fantasy. It's all about their attitude after and the fact that they got Enix to switch sides as well. You could say Yamauchi was stabbed in the back and is now out for revenge.

Judging by the losses made from the Final Fantasy movie the company could really use the Game Boy Advance right now but that wont be happening any time soon.

Thanks to Video-Senki for help with the translation.

www.video-senki.com/

Sega had a better day than usual yesterday -- their stock is going up, up, up in Japan after an analyst at Morgan Stanley gave it a 'strong buy' recommendation. He believed the stock price before (Sega had been going nowhere but down for most of the past year) did not accurately reflect the cost-saving move from hardware to software the company had made over the course of this year. As a result, one share is currently 2265 yen (about $18.70), up 10 percent from yesterday. It's reassuring to see that someone, at least, is impressed with what they're doing.

Square prez Nao Suzuki, on the other hand, is not particuarly impressed with the job his company did. He had an interview yesterday with the Nikkei Business newspaper, a platform he used to wail about the measures he could've, or should've, taken to prevent Square from falling into the ambiguous position they are now. "Our true enemy," he admitted, "was our pride" -- pride that resulted from the heady years of the original PlayStation. When Square originally announced back in 1997 that the Final Fantasy series would be PS exclusive from now on, Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi treated the affront lightly, saying that the console selection "couldn't be helped". Suzuki responded by publically bashing the N64 and convincing Enix to join the PS camp along with them, which, looking back at it now, he realizes wasn't an incredibly smart move. The little grudge match between them that resulted was the main reason Square failed in their bid for a Nintendo license earlier this year. Without Square, though, the PlayStation platform wouldn't be half as interesting to a whole slew of gamers, and so the well-publicized buyout of last week occurred.

In the interview, Suzuki brought up the idea of spinning development teams off into separate companies, Sega-style, as a possibility for the future. A funky idea, having two ex-giants working out like that.

*So...maybe Hiroshi Yamauchi (President of Nintendo) knew what he was doing when he said there were no plans to let Square develop for them. Now that FF the movie bombed BIG TIME, and with less then stellar sales of games (other than FF)...Square is begging for Nintendo to let them back (esp. to develop for GBA)? Hahaha. And they had to sell 20% of their stocks to SONY just to cover their losses? And now Square is thinking about dividing up their development teams like Sega? How the mighty have fallen.*

ZL

I can just see Square: "Please, please please let us develop for GBA Nintendo..."

Nintendo: "Not until you commit full development to Nintendo Gamecube as well."

Square: "But...Big Brother SONY won't let us, and we had to sell our soul to them just to stay alive."

Nintendo: "Hahahaha...Then too bad!!!"
Empires wax and wane; states cleave asunder and coalesce.
Edited by: Zhuge Liang at: 10/21/01 1:48:24 am

Squaresoft was only thinking short term instead of long term when they left Nintendo. SquareSoft looks only for profits. They aren't making good innovative games anymore, only seeking to milk the cash rewards of making games that appeal to stupid americans.

Yeah and anyone looking forward to Final Fantasy X should be shot, like those who actually bought FF8.

SquareSoft will die out, it's no longer on the forefront of anything and in their own arrogance, they will suffer. Even though the Japanese government will obviously bail them out (like it does for all the inneffectively run companies), even the Japanese Development Bank can't afford to bribe people to buy Square products.

Sorry Square, but you deserve to fall...luckily your products have been so pathetic as of late (I think the fall was around the SNES...haha), it wont be a far drop for a company concerned with profits and not with gaming or creativity-like you once were.

I have to say that I'm one of those who shouldn't be shot, but maimed and obliterated from existance. I happened to like FFVIII. Not for it's game play, but for the way they created the characters, and how it was more character focused, yadda yadda yadda. To each his own, but don't say that those who have different opinions should be killed.

Massacre Man: Quite possibly the clone of a greater man....

<img src="http://ssjarena.hispeed.com/EZImages/pdl_cover.jpg"ALT=For my one true love?">

Breeding grounds....

FEAR NOT.

For I thought FFIX was a horrible, HORRIBLE game

Therefore you're not alone in your odd-FF-taste-ness.

"Bang."

Spike
Spiegel
"Whatever happens... happens."

"I thought I was watching a dream I'd never wake up from. I actually bought FFVIII and I LIKED it very much. Should I deserve to be shot then?

<img src="http://ssjarena.hispeed.com/EZImages/marinespic.gif" border="2"alt="We boys don't run like little babies...">

Hmmmm I liked Cactar! But thats it.

I probably enjoyed it less when the President of SquareSoft was interviewed and asked about the difference between the crappy FFs and the older better ones.

He ignored the question about lack of creativity and innovation and just kept bragging about sales numbers in the US. Any company that only concentrates on sales is stupid. It needs content...not just the same thing over and over again.

I have the solution! If Square is dying, them they could get desparate enough to sell the rights to some of their games, thus Rare or Niney could buy the rights to the Old FF games, and redo them for GBA! I would also buy the rights for Parasite Eve, and some FF Characters I want to use in some of my plots..... Yes, this could work out well indeed. And when they get very desprate, I will buy the FF name rights, and make A proper FF movie! One with Summons, like Bahmutt and Odin! One with Moggles! ONE WITH CHOCOBOS! I have some ideas already! It would be full of Camo appearences of FF characters, other Square Characters, and since I will buy it through Niny and Rare, expect a few other game camos as well!
I would start off with the main heros in some tomb, going though all these traps, and haivng random battles, and for a little joke, they would be joke copies of a normal battle in a RPG, complete with menus showing the characters selecting their moves, and the "hit" which then turns out to be a "Miss" when the writing appears, and as well as the real speech, there would be the usual text with Avatar!. Then once they get out they think they are home free, but suddenly.... you got it! A boss battle occurs!
Also the graphics would not be altra realistic, but there will be things like every hair animated, but the would something like cell shading for the faces, so the are more like the old big eyed faces... Ask me for more if you like the ideas so far....

Square's not dying.

They were in DEEP (you know what), but SONY stepped in and bought 20% of the company. Square says they are still free to develop for others...YEAH RIGHT. Anyway, FF10 is doing well, and that has restored some of Square's glory...not to mention helped ease their financial problems. There is still a small chance though. Square wants GBA development bad, and Square's President PUBLICALLY stated a few days ago that the Gamecube was easier to develop for than the PS2...a marked change from their earlier dissing of the N64. And...they (Nintendo and Square) are in fact talking once again...though what will happen remains to be seen.

ZL
Empires wax and wane; states cleave asunder and coalesce.

As far as I know, Nintendo is the one begging Square to come back, not the other way around. Both sony and nintendo are evenly matched, Square would be happy to just stay with Sony.

After all, square and nintendo had an agreement saying that nintendo would make a cd system, but they didnt, and broke the agreement, so square put their foot down and said "fine you want to screw us, then we're leaving" and moved to sony.

Judging by their success with the Final Fantasy games, I sould say it was a wise decision, since they wouldnt be as good on a cartridge system. Especially when the adult oriented games are released on a system mostly for kiddies.

Nintendo made a wise move by asking square to come back. Maybe then they might actually bring over a more adult crowd back to Nintendo. But dont count Sony out yet. From what I hear, Square will still be making games for them too.
Vaseline in a sock does not a Bill Cosby make.
