Post subject:  Adolescence and Videogaming

Hey guys, I wonder if you can answer this questionnaire from someone I know:

Hello,

I am a graduate student currently enrolled in a teacher education course. One of our assignments is to study issues which affect adolescents, and I chose to write my project on adolescents and video gaming. Thus, I am hoping some of you might take the time to help me out on this project. I am not offering anything for your answering this questionnaire, save for my thanks, and the opportunity to help increase the knowledge of at least one class of future teachers on the subject.

This is a 15 question questionnaire on video gaming and adolescence. I’ve tried to limit the number of questions and keep the topics simple, but I encourage you to elaborate in detail on your answers. You DO NOT have to currently be an adolescent to answer it; in fact a range of gamers would be perfectly welcome. Further, I am not asking for any personally identifying responses either; all I ask is that you answer as honestly and to the best of your knowledge as possible. If you don’t have time to answer everything in one sitting, feel free to come back and edit in your responses. I will probably be collecting data for the next 10 or so days.

Thank you for your valuable time. Please keep your responses to one post per person (feel free to edit within your post). Again, I will be collecting data from the thread for approximately 1-1 1/2 weeks. Indeed, your replies may also increase your own board’s discussions and help the owners of the site understand their community demographics better as well (so answering may be (ideally) mutually beneficial to both me and your community). Here are the questions:

Adolescence and Video Gaming Questions:

1) How old are you, and what is your gender (if you would rather give an age range for your age, that’s fine: e.g., 13-17; 18-25; 25-35; 35 and older).

2) How many hours (on average) do you play (daily/weekly, etc.)?

3) Why do you play videogames?

4) What is your favorite genre of videogame and why?

5) How much money do you spend/have you spent on videogames (you or your parents) over the years?

6) What game consoles do you currently own, and what systems have you owned in the past? Do you play arcade and PC games as well?

7) Name your favorite videogame(s) of all time and describe why these are your choices.

8) Who do you play with? Do you play alone, with friends, online (what is typical for you, and if it’s a combination of these, please elaborate)? Is gaming a social experience for you?

9) Have you ever set aside a priority (job, school, work, other) in order to play a game? If so, how frequently do you do this and have you suffered any adverse consequences as a result?

10) Have you played games that could be described as educational (a game that expanded your knowledge; for example a historically based game where you learned something beyond the game play)? What was the game(s)?

11) Does videogame play affect your personal identity? Do you identify with characters you’ve played as, and if so, has the game affected your perceptions of every day life? For example, if you like multiplayer fantasy games, do you act out scenarios based upon how you would act in everyday life (in the game), or do you take on a persona that you idealize but are not like in real life? Conversely, have game experiences ever affected how you’ve act in real life situations? *Please elaborate.*

12) How have your tastes in videogames changed over time? For example, has there been a progression from “kiddy” to more “mature” games for you? Are the games you play now any different from the games you played when you were younger?

13) Describe your emotional states when you play videogames. How does playing games affect your emotional state while playing, after playing, and in real life? For example, what is your emotional state like when you are in an extremely difficult level that you cannot pass no matter what you do? If you are stuck in a game and have to do another activity (say, study for a test), are you more irritable/unfocused while doing that activity (has the videogame impacted you beyond the game itself)?

14) Have your parents ever placed restrictions on your video gaming activities? Do (or if you are older, did) they check the types of games you are/were playing?

15) Do you believe that violent videogames makes you more inclined to aggression (in thoughts/actions). Do you feel less empathy toward others after playing these types of games? Do you believe in the notion that the media (TV/games/movies) have an influence on people’s actions/perceptions?

If you wish to, feel free to elaborate further on any of these questions (or any other videogame topic not covered; e.g., are videogames positive or negative elements in adolescence), and write your own thoughts on the subject.

Thank you.

If you do not wish to publicly post your response, feel free to email me at: ktol123@gmail.com Again, do not put any identifying information (personal) down. Feel free to use an anonymous email if you wish; all I ask is that you put down the name of the site you are posting from, and that you be honest in your answers.

1) How old are you, and what is your gender (if you would rather give an age range for your age, that’s fine: e.g., 13-17; 18-25; 25-35; 35 and older).
21 and Male

2) How many hours (on average) do you play (daily/weekly, etc.)?
At the moment 45-50 hours ^^;; But I'm unemployed and trying to gain honour on world of warcraft while the current stem is still in place. Under more normal circumstances I would say around 30 hours a week.

3) Why do you play videogames?
Mainly Escapism.

4) What is your favorite genre of videogame and why?
RPG, it goes with the whole Escapism thing. I like the detailed story lines and characters.

5) How much money do you spend/have you spent on videogames (you or your parents) over the years?
Woah, I have no idea how much I've spent. Probably thousands of pounds over the years!

6) What game consoles do you currently own, and what systems have you owned in the past? Do you play arcade and PC games as well?
Gamecube, PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, N64, Sega Megadrive (genesis), Spectrum, Gameboy, Gameboy Colour, Gameboy Advance, DS, PSP. I also play PC games, but I'm not much of an arcade person although I do visit them sometimes.

7) Name your favorite videogame(s) of all time and describe why these are your choices.
Skies of Arcadia: I just loved the story, the characters. The whole world. I loved the ship to ship fighting and the fact you got your own island. Just the whole game was everything an RPG should be ^^
Pokemon Red: My first pokemon game, I loved it so much when it came out. Very different to anything I had played at that time, and just fun.
World of Warcraft: You can be and do whatever you want. It's also a great way to keep in touch with friends who don't live locally.
Tetris: The real ultimate puzzle game. Who doesn't love it?

I'll leave it there before I get carried away.

8 ) Who do you play with? Do you play alone, with friends, online (what is typical for you, and if it’s a combination of these, please elaborate)? Is gaming a social experience for you?
Until I started WoW I mainly played alone. Even in WoW I don't tend to group play, although I use the chat a lot. I prefer solo mostly, but I do enjoy mutli-gaming although only really with people I know. I'm not a big fan of gaming online with strangers. I'd say I play 80% of the time on my own.

9) Have you ever set aside a priority (job, school, work, other) in order to play a game? If so, how frequently do you do this and have you suffered any adverse consequences as a result?
Not really, I'm pretty good at only using my free time for gaming.

10) Have you played games that could be described as educational (a game that expanded your knowledge; for example a historically based game where you learned something beyond the game play)? What was the game(s)?
I like to think you learn something from most games, in the same way you do by reading a book. Particularly though I guess I've learnt a fair amount from historical RTS games (Mainly Age of Empires and Total War). I've also played a Game called Slime Forest to help in my (attempt :b) to learn Katakana and Hiragana.

I tend to take on a persona (I'm a nerd, I like RP) but the persona does tend to be swayed by my real life identity. Generally (but not always) having similar morals etc. Sometimes though it’s fun to just go for the complete opposite of you normal identity.

12) How have your tastes in videogames changed over time? For example, has there been a progression from “kiddy” to more “mature” games for you? Are the games you play now any different from the games you played when you were younger?
I don't think there has been much of a change. I've never been much of a fan of the "adult" type games; FPS etc. I'm more interested in the story and general feel of the game. If its fun to play I don't mind. I have shifted into more serious racing games since I started watching Initial D though...

I'd say it does, although not a lot. If you get irritated at a game you're not going to stop straight away just because you've stopped playing. But nower days I tend to be much more relaxed about such things and as a result I "cool down" more quickly. When I was younger though it defiantly carried over a lot.

14) Have your parents ever placed restrictions on your video gaming activities? Do (or if you are older, did) they check the types of games you are/were playing?

My parents are very liberal, and while they took an active interested in what I was doing they didn't place much restriction on my gaming (they did in fact rent and buy games I was too young to when they though I was mature enough to handle the content).

15) Do you believe that violent videogames makes you more inclined to aggression (in thoughts/actions). Do you feel less empathy toward others after playing these types of games? Do you believe in the notion that the media (TV/games/movies) have an influence on people’s actions/perceptions?
Mostly I don't. I think most people know there is a difference between Real Life and games/films. In fact I think it can be good to have a safe place to do outrageous and socially unacceptable things that you would never do in real life. I certainly don’t think I feel less empathy towards others after gaming. I guess for a few people the lines of reality might not be so clear. But can you blame the game for this? I think not.

That’s about it for me. My opinion might not be valid though as I hope to soon be employed within the industry :b
