Post subject: Why teens fight their parents so much?
PostPosted: Sun Jan 05, 2003 5:58 pm
Im just curious about why teenagers fight with their parents almost all the time. It may not apply to some teenagers, but im sure most of us here, or teenagers else where, have quarreled with our parents. Is there a mythical reason behind it?? I'm just want to see how some of us think on this issue

I used to fight with my parents a bunch, but I consider myself to have been an idiot then. In the process of maturing, I ended up not fighting with my parents much anymore.

And can you change your icon to be your personal picture? This truly depends on the person...

But mostly the reason is that the kid, while growing up has a world limited by its parents. The laws, the rules, the limits, the way things work are all regulated by the parents.

When getting older, those limits, rules, laws are pushed further as the kid's world expands. No longer are you restricted to your house. The kid wants to experience more/new things and his world is expanding.

Not all that the parents' rules/laws are able to hold up anymore. It is in an attempt to define the new limits that the kids are arguing over everything. It is a way that we use to see how far you can go before getting in trouble or danger. Society will mostly dictate how far you can go and if you go too far, police, security officer, will bring you back. The role of setting limits are now in the hands of society and its law enforcing units, instead of your parents.

Once again, good communication is the best way to avoid conflicts. Most of the experiences are new to the kid and the parents probably went through them already and know how to handle them.

Tyipcal scenario:

Teenager: I want to do this!!!
Parent: You can't.
Teenager: But you don't understand.
Parent: I do.
Teenager: No you don't!!!
Parent: I want to help you, because I know what's best for you.

...I think that if I was a parent one day, I'd just add to the last part that I once went through the same situation, just so my kid can relate to me better... ^_^

That's my best theory.

Parents usually forget how they acted when they were kids though. In order to mature, you need to experience different situations on your own. Parents who are overprotective usually end up screwing their child over in the real world because the child has no clue how to function properly in different situations with others.

<img src="http://www.dimensionalstars.com/manaicon.jpg" style="border:0;"alt="For the victory over DTM!"/>
Get down limitless night

I don't agree with the "try it to see by yourself" technique. It's the lazy way out. Lots of kids get into real problems that way, instead of finding their own answers, they just find more problems.

I was not blind when I was a teenager. My parents were not blind either. Simply by sitting with me, they'd explain things out clearly and showed the good and bad aspects of this or that situation.

I then made the decision if I wanted to go through with whatever things I wanted to do.

I appreciate much more that open-mindedness, level of trust and communication, instead of having them shut up and let me try things out blindingly.

It's much more efficient on every aspect. And I do not believe in the screwing their own kids up if the parents are there to support them. I never saw any such kids. Give me an example.

I think you misunderstood me. Talking about the positive and negative points of the situation are always *goodness*, especially letting the child make the decision on his/her own. What I'm saying is that some parents don't even bother to listen to what their child is feeling and the child's reasoning on why they should make a different decision. WWB and her mother are a *greatness* example of this problem. Her mother is VERY overprotective. It's one thing to be protective of your child and to look out for their well-being, but you have to let them learn how to deal on their own. If you shelter your child for most of their life and they finally go out into the real world on their own without having any experience at all, do you really think they're going to be able to handle that?

<img src="http://www.dimensionalstars.com/manaicon.jpg" style="border:0;"alt="For the victory over DTM!"/>
Get down limitless night

Edited by: Xx Goddess Ryoko xX at: 1/5/03 10:09:20 pm

Oh! I see!

Well, maybe your parents were over protective from what I here... Mine were just protective...

But keep in mind this as well... It's always more dangerous for a girl to be out there than a guy. Try to understand your parents. They don't act like they do for nothing. What they're truly after is to ensure that you guys last as long as you can.

But the movie part is extreme...

You know, the reasons that parents act the way they do is that the can remember how they thought when their brains were overloaded on horomones. They remember all the dope and alcohol pushed around where they hung out. They try to protect you kids from those dangers.

All to often the parents forget that if they teach kids to say no to drugs and alcohol, and teach them the consequences for saying yes, that some day when the need arises, the children will be able to "just say no".

You can't keep kids shut in for life. I think that the super over protective parents realize to late that they have not instilled good morals and try to make up for it buy shutting kids in. But, in doing that, the kids lose out on life.

..my feeling is that if [your parent thinks you're / you're] mature enough, then you should be allowed to do whatever, as you're capable of making an intelligent decision. If you just want to be free and "experience" life, then you're obviously not alone, but you're incapable of making an intelligent decision when all you end up doing is wasting your life with drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes.

I feel that parents should be very liberal, but to a point--it's a horrible decision if they're letting the kids act like jackasses for fun, to "experience," when they're obviously not learning anything when they're being irresponsible morons!!

Spanish bombs, yo te quierro infinito
Yo te querda, oh mi corazon
Spanish bombs, yo te quierro infinito
Yo te querda, oh mi corazon
