Guitar lessons/tips

^_^ I've just bought myslef a nice shiny new guitar! Not electric mind you. ^_^ Does anyone know of a good website that teaches how to play and maybe some software that goes over each note as the sing plays by? ^_^ Oh! Since I strike the strings with my right hand, what does my left hand do in the mean time? I see people moving it over the different strings, but if I do that, I simply muffle down the sound of that string... Can you help a complete newbie? ^_^

Uh, you do realise that your left hand is used to press the strings against the frets (metal bars) on the neck in order to achieve the desired notes, right? For simple notes, you just need to keep them pressed for as long as you want the note to ring. There are neat wee tricks like pull-offs, hammers-on and bending (which can get pretty painful - my teacher's tip for that is bonjella under the nail after/during extended play), but for the basics, all you need to do is keep them pressing the strings. As far as general tips go, all I'll say is that, with any instrument, it can be hard and frustrating to get the hang off, but it'll be SO worth it in the end. *hugs guitar* Find what you like and what you don't. Try out different things. I've had a go at a few things, and have found I really enjoy just hitting out a good chord riff (making me a crapius-rhythmius-guitariust - a not so rare breed!). Don't worry about it! I actually appreciate you telling me that! I'm so completely a newbie at guitar playing that I simply can't get lower. ^_^ hehehe I'm seriously thinking of getting courses now. I can't explain it, I alreay love guitar playing without even knowing how to play. ^_^ Maybe I'm not pressing the strings correctly, since when I do, there's no sound coming out of my guitar... Oh yeah! I've bought myself a pic as well. But do you recommend playing with one or do you use your fingernails? I've prepared myself by letting them grow already, but they still seem too short to be even remotely useful at striking strings...

Heh, I like my plecs (my personal favourites are red Jim Dunlop Jazz IIIs), but then I'm more of a strummer than a picker. I do recommend lessons - I've learned loads from my guitar teacher. As far as pressing the strings goes, best advice i can give is to press them straight down against the neck, just before a fret (e.g. if on the highest - as in pitch - string, you can press just before the first fret down from head in order to produce an F - provided your giutar is tuned correctly). So what's your guitar like anyway, and how much did you spend on it? What did you get with it? Yup! Got the little electronic tuner with a spare set of strings. My guitar is a lovely Yamaha FG-413S, with the nice shiny darker polish. It sounds great compare to a lot of the other models in the store! Very rich and deep! Lots of the other models sounded muffled and less powerful. ^_^ I didn't want to go crazy on my first guitar, so this was an affodable one. ^_^ However, I made sure that the face was made of solid wood and the bridge of rosewood. With the case and everything, it went up to about 450$ CAD, which translates to about 300$ US. ^_^ Once I feel more comfy with it and more experienced, I'll surely go up the ladder with a nicer guitar! ^_^

Email sent! By the way, you must have pretty tough finger tips by now, right? Pressing on the strings does hurt after a while! ^_^ I'll try to play as much as I can to get them tougher. I'm guessing that 2-3 weeks from now, the skin at the tip will be tougher/thicker... ^_^

I've went with the metal strings. I've been warned by friends to pick nylon, but after listening to the sound in store, I've made mind mind for metal, since the sound seems to last longer and seems more crystal clear. Right now, the tips of my left fingers are all red. ^_^ I might give dish gloves a try, just need to buy really small/tight ones so that they don't touch the other strings... After much exploration, I've came to conclusion that I have to learn by heart the location of the notes on my guitar. ^_^ It's a strange feeling though. It feels like I have a new way to express myself! It's quite relaxing! ^_^
