I'm really curious as to what Americans think on this, the speech by Senator Byrd on Wednesday, which marks a rare occasion for the past year and a half.
Unpatriotic, a loony democrat, out of touch, or otherwise not mentioned?

www.commondreams.org/views03/0212-07.htm

To contemplate war is to think about the most horrible of human experiences. On this February day, as this nation stands at the brink of battle, every American on some level must be contemplating the horrors of war.

Yet, this Chamber is, for the most part, silent -- ominously, dreadfully silent. There is no debate, no discussion, no attempt to lay out for the nation the pros and cons of this particular war. There is nothing.

We stand passively mute in the United States Senate, paralyzed by our own uncertainty, seemingly stunned by the sheer turmoil of events. Only on the editorial pages of our newspapers is there much substantive discussion of the prudence or imprudence of engaging in this particular war.

And this is no small conflagration we contemplate. This is no simple attempt to defang a villain. No. This coming battle, if it materializes, represents a turning point in U.S. foreign policy and possibly a turning point in the recent history of the world.

[...continued in the link...]

Spanish bombs, yo te quierro infinito
Yo te querda, oh mi corazon
Spanish bombs, yo te quierro infinito
Yo te querda, oh mi corazon

He makes an interesting point. What we are doing now with Iraq and North Korea is not far from the invasions made by facist totalitarian governments of the past. I feel that the only way that we could be justified in our current belligerent actions is if we are ousting the governments of North Korea and Iraq so that the people of those sovereign nations may set up the government of their choice, one which they do not currently have. Obviously, this is not the case, as our leaders are only pursuing war in the hopes of their own personal gain. The Senator is not unpatriotic in my opinion, rather he is a new-age isolationist, regardless of his mudslinging at the Bush Administration (Not that Clinton was any better, or any other Administration for that matter...).

I really am starting to feel doubts about our involvement in Iraq and North Korea. For decades, people across the world have lived with the threat of unsuspected terrorist attacks. What makes Americans so great that we must go on a man hunt after one attack, and make the whole world suffer as a result? There are other ways of dealing with terrorists, and our nation's leaders are using the war on terror as a front to further their own desires.

BTW DBD, great post. Byrd is an interesting man to say the least. He certainly has a somewhat messy past and that's not even counting his membership to the KKK.

And yet, at the same time I think he raised some very valid points and I think his past shouldn't always necessarily be proof that someone's thoughts and feelings will always be wrong.

I dunno, Byrd is insane, but I do appreciate him expressing the general sentiments of anyone with any logic.

The American government is needlessly and wrecklessly warmongering with Iraq which endangers the American people by further justifying terrorism against us...and will further destabilize the area...and what exactly is our plan once we've ousted Saddam? It seems the administration hasn't thought that far.

If we go to war, there is little doubt in my mind that we will win. But the TRUE test and the true problems will be what happens afterwards...that will be the true challenge and I don't think it's one we have yet done successfully considering our past.

I wonder when the hell the US is going to learn. Want an interesting perspective? Check out the history of the middle east, specifically in the past 150 years of so.

British occupation
British sponsered puppet governments following "independence"
Balfore promising part of the area no known as Israel to the Russinas, Jews, and Arabs.
The UK walking away when it came out that they had done so, and could not (obviously) make good on the promises.
UN coming in and divying up the land
Arabs attack (big surprise, it was their friggin territory) then Israel, well armed due to US involvment, defeats arabs and take MORE of their land.

Given all of that, is it any wonder that many Arabs see us as evil?

And may I remind you that when WE were faced with a better armed, trained, and organized force (Redcoats) we resorted to tactics that at the time amounted to terrorism? Granted it was directed at British Troops, but were we able to cross the pond so easily would we have stopped there? I doubt it.

JoyCrushers Menagerie - The Collected Works of Yorokobi Assaiki

- Winner of "Superior Fic" at Jurian Towers -

...shup, ZM2k ;(
He used to post here, Araq, long long ago.

Anyway, I sorta feel that he doesn't really form a concrete point in this speech, only small sub-points that seem to be a silly assault of the Bush administration. Though I do feel glad that there has been a Senator to come forward against the war, I think that if it was a bit more organized and united, then it would be much more effective. This really does reflect the Democratic position as of late--disorganized and individual stances on issues, with nothing to tie them together. If there is to be a greater anti-war stance in the Senate, then there needs to be some greater unity of Democrats.

Spanish bombs, yo te quierro infinito
Yo te querda, oh mi corazon
Spanish bombs, yo te quierro infinito
Yo te querda, oh mi corazon

But there wont be an anti-war faction in the senate. Even most of the Democrats want some kind of action to be taken.

"I'm the greatest, and I can't possibly be beat!- Cassius Clay aka Muhammed Ali

"I am become death, the destroyer of worlds"- Robert Oppenheimer

Wait so the speech is saying that all our European allies are leaving us? Man Bush must be very ignorant to keep going with this if his country and the rest of the world doesn't want war.

I am the one.

I am Tsunami's apprentice.

I am one of the few

able to produce

10 Light Hawk Wings!!

Well, today NATO commited itself to defending Turkey if Iraq attacks it in the event of a war. In the commitee, Belgium and Germany were against it (France wasnt included), but they capitulated under pressure from the rest of NATO. So, it looks like only Germany, Belgium, and France are against action in Europe.

"I'm the greatest, and I can't possibly be beat!- Cassius Clay aka Muhammed Ali

"I am become death, the destroyer of worlds"- Robert Oppenheimer
