Post subject: I want lighting fast internet downloads!!
PostPosted: Thu Apr 03, 2003 4:29 am
Now that I am doing more things on the internet. I am starting to get very very very very frustrated at my download time and even for that matter my page loads. Right now I have the standard 56K modem and dialup connection with NetZero Platinium. Its really slow, but really cheap! I am now looking to get something better, but I want to do some research first.

O.K my first question should be is there anything I can do to increase my downloading time as is? Are those programs that say they can increase your downloading time by 200% scams? Is there something I can do to my computer to increase my download speed as is or could help a little?-- My computer is decent.

Alright, my next question to you people: What is the fastest internet connection you can have. MSN Broadband or DSL or the one they advertise through DTV (might be DSL) or maybe something even better?

I would also like to know how many Kb/s they say they can achieve with there internet connection
.............................................................................

Or how about this if some of you could tell me what internet connection you have and how many Kb/s they say they can acheive and also the cost per month and startup cost. That would be great.

Cable for me also. I've benchmarked mine as fast as 3.6mbaud, but typical is more like 2.5-3.0 mbaud. For downloading I can usually get 400kbytes/sec, but I've seen it at over 500 before.

Midnight Lagoon

Henheart's Universe

Anime Community

Edited by: mjhennessey at: 4/3/03 7:32:32 am

400Kb/s?!?!?! I get about 5 KB/S trying to download files on avg. How much is Cable per month and what is the cost for setup. Is it also unlimited internet excess or after a cetain amount of time you get charged for more use.

You will need to inquire at your local cable operator for exact monthly costs and an installations fees. I would guess that the monthly fee would be about 50-60 dollars for the internet service by itself. They will probably give you a better rate if you combine it with a TV package like I do. The connection is the same as an ethernet LAN connection, you are always connected to the net, so there are no additional time use rates. The 400k download speed also assumes that I am loading from a web server. If you are downloading shared files from someone's home pc, you can pull the data only as fast as they can send it, which will vary a lot.

Midnight Lagoon

Henheart's Universe

Anime Community

Also, if you're using direct connect, kazaa, or any other p2p thing, don't expect to get anything more than 50kbs, unless you're extremely lucky.. usually I get around 15-25kbs from a good source. ;o

Sagte vender hun Hovedet halfft
Lyddende fjærnt til Ord som bli'r talt
Et Stæd under Bakken, om Hiertets Vee

So I am limited by the bandwith from the other person in a P2P sharing program! If I have a internet connection that can download lets say 400Kb/s I could only download 10kb/s if that person doesn't have alot of bandwith or isn't a good source. Well, that just sucks!

I do like the idea of having the internet running all of the time so I could download files automatically by having a P2P file sharing program open. However is that really worth $50 darllors a month when right now I pay $9.95. And yet get only half less download speed. I will have to think about it.

I don't know why you want us to prove that cable and DSL is infinetly faster than 56k. There's simply no contest. It's not as though there's a small difference--there's a massive one. P2P is one thing, but webservers? I've never seen anything take more than half an hour to download for a 150mb download (unless it's a foreign server), whereas I was waiting for hours upon hours to hope for a 100mb download with 56k.

You can weigh the differences if you want, but the price is reasonable enough for me and the rest of my family, who use the internet avidly. I, personally, wouldn't even consider trying to download all the stuff that I do now without cable or better.

Sagte vender hun Hovedet halfft
Lyddende fjærnt til Ord som bli'r talt
Et Stæd under Bakken, om Hiertets Vee

Edited by: DeathBeforeDishonor at: 4/3/03 11:25:46 pm

Cost for Cable broadband is generally $35 a month if you have cable service, otherwise i'm not sure. Though my friend gets 3.6Mb/s on his cable connection. Which makes it well worth while. Which also translates to about 450KB/s, though you should pay attention to the fine print, speeds will vary...

Broadband will blow away 56k at anytime. Plus some broadband have newsgroup service, which is another nice lil anime/game/mp3 niche for your hungry leeches. But not all of us have access to these great inventions, so i guess you'lll have to find out if it is available in your area first. For me it is definitely worth the 45 bucks, which download at 200k max (which is pathetic but what can i do). Its also great for gaming(tho mine still have around 120 ping for some reason).

O ya, not to mention u get free TV cable with it.

Oh, for gaming, if you get a stable and fast service, you'll be cruising with a 20 ping at those local servers :)
One of my q3 clanmates hosted a server at NYU--stable as anything, and I would get 15 ping to that! :) However, if the cable is being a bitch, which is rare (as in once every few months for a few hours), you go down to 150 ping :(

Sagte vender hun Hovedet halfft
Lyddende fjærnt til Ord som bli'r talt
Et Stæd under Bakken, om Hiertets Vee

back at west coast (San jose), the cable is probably the worst in the entire nation. 200k at max! and slower at peak hours! Hmmm, there seems to be alot of talk about cable. I really hate Cable T.V if any of you have evey had cable and then switched to dish you know what I mean. Dish is just sooo much better. I guess though cable might have the edge on internet service, but I don't want cable t.v. And by not getting cable t.v pay more for internet! That just doesn't seem right.

I was wondering if any of you have every had DWAY from direct tv. You know the one with that annoying red head always advertising on episode 227. I was curious about that one.

What does cable tv have to do with anything? I do agree it sucks compared to satellite though.

My DSL is pretty slow. 100kb/s max and at kazaa, it varies from 5kb-50kb, though usually in the 10-30kb range. :(
