That's wrong. ;o
Not enough RAM will slow down your games, so buying more RAM will speed up your games, but it will be capped at a certain point because they're running how they're supposed to be. Having a gig of RAM and having ten gigs of RAM wouldn't make a difference in speed, to the best of my knowledge. And PC133 would be slower than DDR, which would be twice as fast at PC266... therefore the RAM, if not used completely (so that it doesn't slow down the rate at which you can access it), would be far superior to your SDR ;o
After a certain point, speed relies solely on the speed of the CPU, Hard Drive, and Graphics Card, with a few minor things here and there. Of course, getting an insanely fast graphics card won't make that much difference on a slower computer (433MHz), but as you go up the ladder, the effect of the better graphics card will exponentially grow. ;o

And, just so you know, one of the best Quake3 players can own anyone when he has a decent computer and 100 ping, even if they're playing with a better computer and 20 ping.

...and while I prove you wrong, I call you a good gamer, so whichever way you want. Not even half of online gaming is the computer you use. ;o

torneherren speiles i ødelagt liv mens
sorgengler regner fra
oven til kosmos’ endeløse tidsrom skjenker vi
den siste død

|

On that old PC that I don't use any more 512MBs of SDRAM made all the diffrence most of the time between beating the heck out of a 1.3GHz person with a 64MB DDR GF4 or Radeon9700 vid card, and 256MBs of system RAM.

But that was my old PC, build a new one 6 months ago, and if I kicked ass on the POS before, well don't get to close if you see me.

|

No.. unless the 1.3ghz computer had multiple applications running in back, their computer would run circles around that one; however, I'd estimate skill in multiplayer games (quake3 and other fps' especially) to be less than 20% computer, 50% talent, and 10% luck, and 20% ping (unless over 100 ping, whereupon you automatically lose unless the other person really, really sucks), just to judge from my experiences with competing online.

To say that your old computer was better than theirs is completely ludicrous, as it quite obviously wasn't. Not only that, but SDR is half the speed of DDR, even though you probably won't notice a slowdown with 256MB of RAM because you really shouldn't be running that many programs anyway when you play games, anyway.

torneherren speiles i ødelagt liv mens
sorgengler regner fra
oven til kosmos’ endeløse tidsrom skjenker vi
den siste død

|

I didn't say it was better I said it was a POS, what I did say that made it good enough to kick as was the RAM. Most games we are talking about in this thread such as quake3, CnC renegade, UT don't require more then 400MHz, so if I play quake on the POS all I really need is a 32MB vid card, game setting to lowest graphic quality and skill, then the RAM and porcessor on the POS would be good enough just as long as I had a good connection.

Most of my advantage was skill, and sence I had 512MBs of RAM and a good connection via cable, all I needed was a 32MB GF2 with game settings at lowest quality and 1024x768 Res, and that was good enough.

I don't use the POS any more because I built a HyPro PC 6 Months ago, and I use that instead, but I still see people on Q3 who say they use Lowends that woop ass and it is mostly because they have 512MBs of RAM, and there High End enemy is using 256MBs of RAM with a 2.0GHz processor and a 128MB GF4 TI 4800 or Radeon 9700pro. Video cards process light effects, polygons, and resolution, so if your looking for eye candy, yes a 128MB Radeon 9700pro is the way to go, but eye candy takes a backseat to playablity. If you want to use your skills to win, your not going to set your graphics setting very high unless you have the best video card that can handle it. If you have a GF3 64Mb card, your going to realy on your system RAM and tune down your graphics to win. If you do have a the best vid card you still need 512MBs of system RAM, I mean add it up, your OS is going to need some RAM, your video card needs some system RAM, your sound CARD needs some system RAM, your Dailup or NIC needs RAM, your HardDrive is going to need a to use your RAM, then BOOM! your GAME NEEDS SYSTEM RAM!

OS Wind2k needs 128MBs RAM
Sound card needs 16MBs RAM
Video card, ATI Radeon 9000pro 64MBs RAM
Zonet NIC, ??? well it doesn't say, but it came with installation software, so it needs RAM
THEN! CnC Renegade - Requires 96MBs of RAM and Recommends 256.

We both know that games suck if you only have bare minimum, your just going to get owned, so do the math
128+16+64+256=464MBs

But you know, your not going to have just the OS, just the videocard, just the sound, just the nic, and just the game, your also going to have securtiy software! Yeah, we do need to scan for viruses, and have some way of slowing donw if not stopping hackers from busting up your PC from the net, and you also have to concider those damn spyware things that leach onto your system when browsing the internet, so you may also have anti-spyware software taking up System RAM. You may have 256MBs RAM maybe RAMBUS PC1033, that fastest RAM out, but you arn't going to be going very far on your games if your RAM is all used up by all the other stuff. All the RAM is doing is processing the data stored faster, your video card data from the ATI Radeon is processing 64MBs of data at 1033MHz, but what good is that if the game recommends 256MBs for itself, yes it doesn't require it, but it recommends for best proformance, and your 64MBs in the hole, - 16 from sound, -the minimum of 64 from OS, though OS recs 128, -??? for NIC, -??? for BlackIce Firewall. A 1.3GHz with 128MB vid is nothing without enough RAM.

You don't have to have a lot of things in the background running, you can just have those very basic things.

Edited by: JadenStriker2ndGen at: 5/22/03 2:57:35 pm
|
