Your right. this trip was sad though
A person was ejected from the Raven rollercoaster

"It is with great sorrow that we inform you there was a fatality at Holiday World on Saturday, May 31. A female guest visiting from the East Coast was involved in an accident at The Raven roller coaster shortly before the park closed to the public for the evening. She was not in her seat when the train returned to the station. A doctor who was a guest at the park, plus the parksÂ’ EMTs were on the scene within minutes and performed CPR and other emergency procedures until an ambulance arrived. The woman, whose name has not been released, was transported to the local hospital, where the coroner pronounced her dead. The Koch family and everyone at Holiday World & Splashin' Safari are devastated by this tragedy. Our prayers go out to the family. The park family will be in mourning on Sunday, June 1, and Holiday World & Splashin' Safari will be closed to the public on that day. A private counseling session will be available to all employees at the park at 1:00 pm Sunday. An investigation is underway. This message will be updated as more information becomes available. Sincerely,The Koch Family "

"Spencer County authorities were investigating an incident at Holiday World & Splashin' Safari in Santa Claus, Ind., that left one person dead and one injured.

According to the Spencer County dispatch office, police and ambulance services were called to the amusement park at 8:11 p.m. Saturday.

Paula Werne, the director of public relations for the park said there had been a fatality at the park involving a ride and that the park would be closed today out of respect for the family.

Spencer County police officials and and the county coroner were not available Saturday night.
"

I got really scared and left the campgrounds I was at. There was a rolercoaster that I had to jump out of just before it took off last weekend, some guy pushed the bar down as he got out and it was near closing time so they were waiting for more people to fill up the ride, the guy had already checked if people were fastend in when I sat down so the buzzer went off and it started moving, I soiled myself and jumped out lucky I was sitting near the back... By the way it's a triple loop rolercoaster too...

more info. I will keep providing as much as I can.

"Reporter: Rhanda Stewart

Web Producer: Jason Beisel

"We're deeply saddened and our deepest sympathies go to family, we're crushed. It's a rough day," Holiday World President Will Koch says.

Employees at Holiday World and Splashin' Safari are having a hard time coping with the situation. Many of them have been at the park since it happened Saturday night around 8 p.m.

Park owner Will Koch says the woman who died was strapped in by a safety belt and a lap bar when she took off on the Raven. "We had 20 passengers leave on the Raven and only 19 returned. The passenger who did not return was pronounced dead at the hospital," Koch says.

He also says that the woman's fiancee was in the seat next to her. It was the last ride of the day, and they were in the back seat. They were both roller coaster enthusiasts. There for the Stark Raven Mad Coaster event.

Koch has spoken with the victim's fiance. "He's been very helpful, we're trying our best to console him. There is no finger pointing, no blaming. We are all trying to get through this together," Koch says.

Police spent the day securing the area waiting for state inspectors to investigate the roller coaster. As of now they don't know exactly how the woman fell out of her seat. "We're still investigating that. We really don't know. We are waiting to get all the details to put them together to see how this occurred," Town Marshall Lee White says.

"She was found midway through the ride through the base we call the mid-course drop," Koch says.

Many of the coaster enthusiasts in town for the event were staying at Santa's Lodge, and they all checked out Sunday morning. Sharon Alvey works at the lodge and says she's never seen such an upset group of people. "Those checking out expressed sadness not at Holiday World, just that it had to happen. It was just a sad event," Alvey says.

The park was closed Sunday out of sympathy for the family, and flags were at half mast. Nothing like this has ever happened before at Holiday World. "That's why this is so tough, why we are feeling this so deeply. We're going to do what ever it takes to make sure we never have another one," Koch says.

Holiday World says that they have never had any problems with the Raven. Coaster accident still mystery
Victim was at park as part of national enthusiasts' group

By ANDREA PRESTON Courier & Press staff writer prestona@courierpress.com
June 2, 2003

SANTA CLAUS, Ind. - Investigators spent all day Sunday taking apart the Raven roller coaster, trying to determine what caused the first ride-related fatality at Holiday World.

The accident that killed 32-year-old Tamar Fellner of New York City happened at the apex of the ride, which has been rated the world's best wooden roller coaster.

Officials would not speculate about what caused Saturday's accident, but the area of track where Fellner left the ride is known as the "infamous fifth turn," according to one coaster enthusiast.

The park was hosting national roller coaster clubs this weekend for the annual "Stark Raven Mad" event.

Fellner was one of about 850 roller coaster enthusiasts at the park for the event. The accident happened shortly after the park's 8 p.m. closing, when coaster club members were supposed to get exclusive ride time. Officials did not mention whether her membership in the coaster club caused her to do anything unusual during the ride. Fellner was in a coaster car with her fiance, whose name was unavailable. They were members of American Coaster Enthusiasts, a worldwide roller coaster organization that has more than 8,500 members.

Fellner sat on the left side of the rear car of the 24-passenger roller coaster, according to William Koch, the president of the family owned Holiday World & Splashin' Safari.

The six-car train had 20 people aboard when it left the station, and everyone was strapped in with both a seat belt and bar restraint, Koch said.

"As soon as they came in, the fiance yelled that something very wrong had happened."

The accident happened near the mid-point of the 90-second ride that is 2,800 feet long, Koch said. It is believed she fell between 60 to 80 feet to the ground - near the highest drop of the ride.

Sean Flaharty, public relations director for the coaster club, said it was the fifth turn where a rider experiences the most lift.

It is that section that both Koch and the Spencer County Police Department believe the accident occurred.

"It's not the steepest drop on the coaster, but we call it the infamous drop," said Flaharty of Columbus, Ohio. "Very few coasters - let alone wooden - have a drop and turn like that in the middle of the coaster."

Fellner suffered massive trauma to her neck and chest region, according to the Rev. Robert Dooley, Spencer County's coroner.

He also responded to the scene as an EMT.

"By the time the ride stopped and she was located, between five to eight minutes had passed," Dooley said, who believed she "was killed instantly."

"There was a surgeon who was in the train - and he, along with our EMTs, went directly to the scene," Koch said.

Fellner was found lying on her side in a grassy area. She was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph's Hospital in Huntingburg, a distance of about 16 miles.

On Sunday, representatives from the state's Department of Elevator Safety and local officials spent the day taking apart and conducting tests on the train that Fellner rode in.

The department is responsible for testing the safety on all of Indiana's amusement park rides. A ride cannot run or can be shut down if the department deems it unsafe.

On Saturday, Koch estimated more than 4,800 riders rode The Raven before the fatal ride.

When the news broke of the accident, Flaharty, along with Paul Drabeck of Santa Claus, were among those enthusiasts gathered in the park's back pavilion before Saturday's after-hour events started.

"Everybody was in shock about what happened. (We) just couldn't believe it," said Drabeck, who was so much a fan of the park that his family moved from Chicago to the Santa Claus area a few years ago.

Flaharty said he'd "never seen so many people be so quiet." "I travel (to events) with a large group of people," he said. "And today, everybody was just in shock and numb about the entire event. Our hearts go out to the family and to those at the park. Holiday World has been nothing but great to us."

Since this is the park's first ride-related fatality, Koch said the staff was having a hard time with the death.

"We are deeply saddened by this tragedy and it's affecting our staff," he said. "It's really hard right now. But everyday, it will get easier for us."

More than 500 park employees attended a special grief counseling session Sunday afternoon.

There are 1,100 seasonal employees and 50 year-round employees at the park.

"I just stood there (in the theater) and cried that all these young people wanted to come and grieve together," said Paula Werne, parks spokeswoman. "Most them weren't even in the area when it happened."

Both Flaharty and Drabeck said they wouldn't stop riding the roller coaster.

"I think this park and that roller coaster are the safest around," Drabeck said. "In fact, I plan on riding it the first time it opens back up."

Because of the accident, the park was closed Sunday out of respect to the family. Those who did show up at the park, though, received free tickets to return another day.

The park will reopen this morning, but both The Raven and The Legend, the park's other wooden coaster, will be closed until the investigation is complete.

Holiday World & Splashin' Safari is the nation's first theme park and has been in operation for 58 years.

Anything said by me does not reflect the views of me or myself.

State finds no problems with roller coaster

By Terry Horne
terry.horne@indystar.com
June 2, 2003

The southern Indiana amusement park ride from which a New York City woman fell or was flung to her death Saturday is well known among roller coaster fans for its uplifting "kick."

Tamar Fellner, 32, was fatally injured after falling 60 to 80 feet from the wooden roller coaster, said Rachel Berg, a spokeswoman for Holiday World & Splashin' Safari in Santa Claus, Ind.

A state inspection found no evidence of any equipment or safety restraint failure, said Alden Taylor, a spokesman for the Indiana Department of Fire and Building Services, which inspects amusement park rides.

Taylor announced today that the state's post-accident inspection Sunday afternoon revealed no violations and no signs of defect or wear in the safety equipment.

Each rider in the six-car train is restrained by a seat belt and a restraining bar.

Taylor said a state inspector found no slippage or other problems in the belt that Fellner should have been wearing. The restraining bar also showed no signs of wear and held its position when force was applied against it.

Taylor said the retraining bar alone might not prevent the ejection of a rider who was not also belted.

“The park has an excellent safely record,” he said. “They are very concerned about their patrons.”

Fellner was sitting in the last car of the train, when she fell or was tossed to her death about 8 p.m.

William Koch, Holiday World president, said that the six-car train had 20 people aboard when it left the station and all were strapped in with a seat belt and bar restraint.

Berg said officials believe the accident occurred near the minute-and-a-half ride's fifth drop -- notorious to some, beloved by others.

According to an Internet review posted by one enthusiastic rider, the fifth drop attempts to send riders, particularly those seated in the last car, "cleanly out of the back of the train." Another Internet reviewer refers to the ride's " 'outta dat seat' kick."

Berg said Fellner had come to the park with her fiance and about 850 others members of American Coaster Enthusiasts, which was holding a two-day excursion to the theme park.

The theme of the tour was Stark Raven Mad 2003, in honor of the wooden coaster that was the site of Saturday's fatal accident.

Berg said Fellner was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Huntingburg, where she was pronounced dead.

The amusement park reopened today after being closed Sunday. However the Raven and another wooden roller coaster, The Legend, which has the same cars and safety equipment, remain closed.

Taylor said the state inspector is undertaking a complete investigation of the Raven and the Legend as a precaution.

Anything said by me does not reflect the views of me or myself.

Edited by: stunningsteve316 at: 6/2/03 2:55:30 pm

More info.

Notes from Media Briefing 6/2/03

June 2, 2003, statement from Will Koch, president and general manager at Holiday World & Splashin' Safari:

Alden Taylor, spokesperson for State Emergency Management Agency (317-232-3992) at the State of Indiana is doing interviews with the news media this morning. He relayed to me that he is telling them the following:
1. Inspector Lance Zeller inspected The Raven yesterday, Sunday, June 2nd. He inspected the car and the seat that had been occupied by Tamar Fellner, 32, of New York City. He found nothing wrong. The seat belt showed no wear. There were no defects of the buckle, was no slippage of the belt, and no defects in the anchor attachments.
2. He then inspected the lap bar. He examined all fasteners, springs, teeth and dogs. He found no wear, no loose fasteners, and no missing components.
3. He checked the lap bars for "up force." He found no defect.
4. Lance is returning to Holiday World today (Monday) to perform a complete reinspection of The Raven and The Legend. This is the same type of inspection that is performed each spring before the park opens for the season.
5. He also indicated to me that he is telling the media that Holiday World is extremely safety conscious. He remembers visiting with his family last summer. A customer ahead of his family in line was just a little under height to ride. The ride operator refused to allow them to ride.
6. He said that Holiday World has an "exemplary safety record and is a first class operation."
7. He is referring to Saturday's event as an "unfortunate accident."

The Santa Claus Police Department, the Spencer County Coroner's Office, and the Spencer County Prosecutor's Office are meeting this afternoon to evaluate evidence gathered regarding the incident, and to plan next steps in the investigation. No statement has been issued other than the one issued by the Coroner's Office Sunday night.

Holiday World has hired an industry expert to investigate the incident, and to make recommendations regarding future operation of the ride. He will arrive tonight and will work at the park over the next three days to investigate and to prepare a report. When that report is complete, it will be released to the media. The Raven will not operate until that report has been issued, and any corrections (if any) have been made to the ride.
The inspector's name is Anthony Rossi. His company is Leisure Tech Services, from North Wilwood, New Jersey.

His credentials include:
1.
