I sure wish LA would buy themselves a team. Then they'd have 26 World Series championships too.

I'm shedding no tears for the Yankees.

They have the heftiest payroll in baseball by a large margin. My favorite team, the Giants had an $85 million dollar payroll and that is one of the heavier ones. The Yankess have between $163-$180 million dollars for the players they by and large bought from poorer franchises. Steinbrenner doesn't even have to pay a lot of that, since he can extort the NY area cable companies for the cash he needs. Nope, not one tear from me.

That said, I told Neelick that the Marlins would win in 5, while he (despite being a Boston fan), said Yankees in 5. We were both off by one game, obviously, since it was a six game series. I had seen how good the Marlins were when they eliminated my Giants. They have solid pitching, great defense, timely hitting, and most importantly, no fear and great heart. The Yankees had a powerful lineup but their defense was suspect. They had great starting pitching, but outside of Mariano Riviera their bullpen was weak. They don't have much team speed, unlike the Marlins, so they could not put as much pressure on by running nor could they manufacture runs as easily. I'm not surprised by the Marlins win. They are a very good team, and they simply outplayed their opponents in the playoffs. It shouldn't be so much that the Yankees "lost it" but that the Marlins won it.

ZL

Empires wax and wane; states cleave asunder and coalesce.

"Swift as the wind, silent as the forest, fierce as the fire, steady as the mountain." A banner used by the Takeda clan of Kai (Sengoku Jidai era).
Edited by: Zhuge Liang at: 10/26/03 3:35 pm

Living in Maryland, and being an Orioles fan, we have a deep hatred for the Yankees ever since that little boy caught the ball while in play, allowing the Yankees to score and cursing the Orioles (Much like what happened to the Cubs, only in this case the boy got rewarded).

That said, the mood on my campus last night was definitely a happy one. Everyone was running around happily screaming that the Yankees lost. I don't think I've ever seen the mood at my campus any happier.

Yeah, and the Marlins won with a few rookies on their team. They got Pierre, Willis, Cabrera, and some other guys as their only rookies and they were pretty good.

The Yankees have some old guys like Wells and Clemens, poor wittle Giambi not even playing 1st base, and since they got rid of Mondesi, they've sucked.

I have to agree that it was a pretty crappy World Series, despite the Yankees losing. It just felt DEAD. The Marlins celebration was easily dwarfed by the Red Sox's WILD CARD CLENCHER. That's what New York gets I suppose...losing in one of the most anticlimatic finishes to the season. Fat/Bald Wells deserves it after all that "Yeah I believe in the curse! We got the babe on our side!" Nicely said by someone who gave off a homerun ON THE FIRST PITCH OF HIS INNING IN GAME 7. Roger struggle a bit these last two Postseason series a bit too huh? HAH. The antichrist deserves it just the same. Rather than hugging statues of dead fat Yankees he should have been hugging his teamates for saving his fat ASS in Game 7 of the ALCS. No, I'm not bitter.

With that said, I'm still fuming even more in retrospect because, to be frank, the Sox will NOT get a chance like this anytime soon. Mike Timlin, one of our best relievers, is up for free agency this year, as well as Todd Walker, who could have been our MVP in this postseason. AND IF THAT WERE NOT ENOUGH, look at after 2004! Nomar Garciaparra, Pedro Martinez, Derek Lowe, Jason Varitek, Bill Mueller, Kevin Millar, Bill Mueller, and David Ortiz are ALL up for free agency. This was a do or die year, and you want to know the grand reason the Yankees beat the Red Sox? Because our manager, despite being great at bringing the guys together, was just plain and simply not tough enough in the field when he needed to be. It's not for sure, but considering how well our bullpen had been in the postseason (Under 1.00 ERA folks), had he gone to them for those last 5 outs I think it would have been a different story. We had a better line-up than anyone else out there, a clutch bullpen, and starters who knew how to play the game (Game 3 of the ALCS being burned out of my memory by now). This team was magical....all those come from behind wins, Derek Lowe phazing that batter in the ALDS with an unhittable sinker. This team was MEANT to go the distance. But now the chance is gone, and probably forever. This was the 1986 World Series of my generation.

An interesting tibbit: The Red Sox set a Major Leage World record in 2003 for the most runs scored before the first out being recorded in the first Inning, 10 runs. They would later score 4 more in that inning, and 11 more in the game. Guess which team it was against?

The Marlins.

Edited by: SSJNate at: 10/30/03 12:37 am

Did they play the Marlins before Jack McKeon came in or after? It makes a difference, because soon after McKeon came in the Marlins went on a major tear and finished with the best record in baseball following that critical juncture.

My Giants beat the Marlines 4 out of 6 times this year, but did that help us? I think it was just the Marlins year, and that this was a team of destiny. I don't know if the Sox could have beaten them any more than the Yankees could. Yes, the Sox had the best offense, but no team speed. They also had a lousy bullpen that only came together in the playoffs. Additionally, it's not like the Red Sox had a world beating defense. Yes, Grady Little probably made a mistake, but that's how it is in baseball during the playoffs. The smallest errors can kill you.

ZL

I should note that the Giants themselves haven't won a World Series since 1954, and I thought that THIS team was also MEANT to go all the way. Some things were just not meant to be.

Empires wax and wane; states cleave asunder and coalesce.

"Swift as the wind, silent as the forest, fierce as the fire, steady as the mountain." A banner used by the Takeda clan of Kai (Sengoku Jidai era).

I'm pretty sure it was post-Jack McKeon, because I remember reading about it while on an Ohio trip after school ended (sometime in June).

About the Bullpen...well, you said it right there. It came together in the playoffs. Mike Timlin almost pitched a perfect game over the course of three weeks! If I remember correctly, they gave up only two runs over the entire postseason...whether they weren't solidified or not in the regular season doesn't matter if they make it to the postseason and get it together...

Frankly speaking, seeing both the Cubs and the Sox lose Game 7's and both coming within 5 outs of clinching with a 3-run lead, both losing because of errors, tired starters, and so on...*sigh* I just can't believe that after coming so close the Marlins were the "team of destiny" this year. Maybe I'm just upset though that this will probably never even come close to happening again...
