I believe that you have to download Japanese language support through the Windows Update site.

|

Also, you might need to change your encoding option to Japanese (for some pages I've had to do this).

My girl, Ryoko.
|

UniCode doesn't help if the web page is in Shift-JIS or EUC. IE isn't smart enought to accurately differentiate between languages, especially if there are two or more languages on the same page.

|

Have any of you done this and gotten it to work? I could use some major help.

Also - what are these encoding things you guys are talking about, would these help me?

|

In IE, while online, you would go to your menu bar, select the Tool dropdown menu and select Windows Update.

After checking for updates, go to Windows XP list below Critical Updates and Service Packs. It's above Driver Updates.

* Welcome
* Pick updates to install
----- Critical Updates and Service Packs
----- Windows XP <- select this one
----- Driver Updates
* Review and install updates

Down the list of Windows XP downloads, there should be Language Packs. Select the View dropdown menu and select/highlight Encoding. A second menu should expand with additional languages. Select Japanese (Auto-Select). I went under the XP update menu but I could not find anything on language packs in the list. I looked in the encoding menu and found a large list of languages, but none of them work, including the Japanese ones listed when I was in japanese sites.

Heh, I am thankful for your help, but this damn windows stuff is driving me nuts.

|

Glad it worked for you. Just remember to check your encoding everytime you load a Japanese web page and see 'gibberish'. You might want to turn off "Auto-Select" if it does this on a regular basis. Japanese web sites often contain an English header and this causes IE to think that the page is in English.

|

Hey TS,

What do the Japanese use most often on their computers?

The two simplified Kanji systems (hiragana and katakana) or do they also use their older kanjis as well? For typing I mean.

I'm a Ayeka/Ryoko fan for good reasons.....

|

From what I've seen, systems come standard with the "joyo" kanji (with both hiragana and katakana) 'dictionary'. When in 'character mode', you type and the list of characters show up according to letters (romanji) and codes. You choose the appropriate characters, whether kanji, hiragana, or katakana. Word processors come with expanded 'dictionaries' and you can add characters to your dictionary. This is importantant if you are a writer and deal with a lot of obscure kanji. (I believe that Kuroda said he had to input a lot of kanji back into his dictionary when he started scriptwriting for GXP.)

Edited by: True Sheol at: 10/20/03 6:52 pm
|
