Oh, so Boston didn't want A-Rod? Okay, well let's just BUY HIM OUT after the Rangers claimed talks were over! It's okay, because we're the Yankees! What's another $20 Million? Who cares if we're ruining baseball?

I HATE THE YANKEES. I've always thought that major league players, be it in baseball, hockey, basketball or football, were grossly overpaid.

I mean, I'm actually paying to see someone do a sport???

I don't even participate! What's the big deal anyway? It's not like performances have increased proportionally to salaries over the years.

Just thinking of all those millions that could be used for other more useful things in life... Baseball needs a salary cap. Seriously. The teams with the most money get the best players, and that's that. I mean, for crying out loud, the Yankee payroll is going to be over $200 Million this year! That's the biggest payroll in SPORTS HISTORY.

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

|

I hate them too.

And baseball really does need to develop at least some kind of revenue sharing system in order to even the playing field. It is unfortunately true that some teams can go out and try to buy championships. Of course, the Red Sox are trying to do this right now as well. I would point out, however, that it isn't really ownership that is standing in the way of a salary cap, they'd love that. It is THE PLAYERS and their UNION that have blocked any type of cap (indeed, the Players Union blocked A-Rod's trade because it "weakened" the deal he negotiated with Texas...even though A-Rod himself was willing to take less money...I guess they feared a slippery slope where owners might gain even a small advantage with curbing the rising cost of payrolls and leveling out the disparity between the haves and have-nots in the league), while strong owners like Steinbrenner stand firmly in the way of revenue sharing (which would weaken teams in strong markets like NY). Both sides need to compromise for the good of the game, but they are shortsighted and afraid to upset the current labor "peace" in the league...thus, they put themselves ahead of the game and the fans who support it and them. Fools. This is partly why they have been losing popularity to other sports (Football and Basketball are more popular).

On a more personal tangent, I might be wrong Nate, but weren't you complaining that A-Rod would be awful for the Sox because Garciapara would be traded in that original deal? I always felt that A-Rod would be even better than Garciapara, and if that deal had worked out you would have also got Magglio Ordonez (from the White Sox as part of that three way Boston-Texas-Chicago trade) to boot. That would have been incredible. Still, the Red Sox did play a fantastic game of one-upmanship with the Yankees even without getting A-Rod (signing Curt Shilling and acquiring Keith Foulke, two excellent moves). Thus, I suppose the Yankees could not stand pat. At any rate, the AL East is now loaded with monster teams. Whatever happens, it should be quite a race.

The way I see it, the Yankee lineup is scary, but Red Sox pitching is actually STRONGER than Yankee pitching right now, at least on paper. Plus, Yankee defense is somewhat shakey. As you know, pitching and defense win championships in baseball.

And my final word on baseball for the upcoming season? Go Giants. ^_^

ZL

Empires wax and wane; states cleave asunder and coalesce.

"Swift as the wind, silent as the forest, fierce as the fire, steady as the mountain." A banner used by the Takeda clan of Kai (Sengoku Jidai era).
|

It's different with the Red Sox proposed trade talks with A-Rod. That was a huge deal because it would be essentially of equal value; that is, Manny for A-Rod, the two most expensive players in the game. However, after it's clear the Red Sox have no interest in paying even more money than A-Rod is worth, what do the Yankees do? They trot up and trade SORIANO for A-ROD? Only the Yankees would be able to do this; just flat out BUY another player. The Rangers, desperate to get rid of that contract, drooled all over Steinbrenner's cash and pushed A-Rod out despite NUMEROUS statements that A-Rod would stay a Ranger, they jump like dogs into the Yankees' lap as soon as it totally benefits them? It's sickening how low the game has gotten because of New York.

In truth, yes, the A-Rod to Boston deal would have made Boston a better team. We'd get improvments at both Shortstop and Left Field. I simply didn't want the trade on a personal level because I love Garciaparra; he represents a lot of the ideals I respect in the Red Sox team. Although A-Rod is a better player stats-wise, I prefer the personality and team spirit of Nomar out of pure respect I have for him.

However, the Red Sox didn't just flat-out BUY A-Rod, like the Yankees did. You see, the Yankees deal wasn't a trade for A-Rod. It was just throwing money around. That's what has me so ticked.

Jaganzoku - Clan of the Evil Eye

|

Oh, I agree with you 100% Nate. It's disgusting. The owner in Texas is an idiot and yes, Steinbrenner spends a ridiculous amount of money maintain his team (which is actually NOT all his own money...he has a huge extortionist like deal with the NY area cable companies who are the real ones spending a fortune to keep the rights to Yankee games, and he's in a large market of course).

EVEN WORSE, the YANKEES MAY NOT BE DONE:

sports.espn.go.com/mlb/ne...id=1736923

If they get Maddox on top of everything else, that will further demonstrate that Baseball has no sense. They continue to kow-tow to the Yankees and think only in the short term rather than how to perpetuate and expand the game by at least giving other teams half a chance.

Boston could've closed the original deal if they spent just $20 million more to satisfy the players union. They didn't think the Yankees would be able to get A-Rod or even try, since Jeter is their shortstop. However, A-Rod wanted out so badly from Texas that he moved to third. Just think about it, if the Sox could've hung on to Garciapara AND got A-Rod...but it's too late now. What the Yankees and Rangers traded was really money and contracts. Manny actually had a bloated contract himself, so Texas would've had to take on more salary than the Yankee deal by trading for him. You're correct in that it wasn't a player for player deal (the deal is indeed unequal). Still, it does make sense on a money level, with Texas being so desperate and NY wanting to stay on top. That doesn't make it right, and it will hurt the game in the long run, but the Yankees still are within the rules and unlike Boston, they satisfied both the Union and MLB.

ZL

Empires wax and wane; states cleave asunder and coalesce.

"Swift as the wind, silent as the forest, fierce as the fire, steady as the mountain." A banner used by the Takeda clan of Kai (Sengoku Jidai era).
|

Well back from vacation.

Ah yes this trade, there I was yesterday when I woke up turned on the TV and they were talking about the "A-Rod" trade and I was all excited that the trade went through then I discovered that it was to the Yankees and not the Red Sox.

I was so upset that the players union would stand in the way of the trade in the first place and then that the Yankees would go in and essentially steal the trade from us. Blah. One of the few things that Ben Afflek and I have agreed since he and J-Lo split.

Anyway, I think that Manny was the one who was involved in the origional trade for ARod, who is an amazing baseball player even though I don't like his personality but that doesn't take a way from what he would have been to to the Sox.

And on top of that the Yankees also picked up Sheffield and fairly good replacements for their pitchers that left last year. Bah I hate the yankees.

I also read about the Yankees and their exclusive rights to the YES radio station. That was pretty bad too. Oh, I'm a sox fan btw

I got more I could say about all this but I need to get some work done. I don't really care. I'm a METS fan!! <<w00t

But anyway, I dislike baseball players now. Everyone is all about money...especially the BoSox and the Yanks. It's getting riddiculous. It needs a cap but the PA would never stand for it.....sigh.

|
