I really liked him.
He was a cool guy.
Prolific too! NINE children, and the last was born only in 2000!!! He was already 80 years old!

The subject pretty much says it all. He died last night at the age of 83. Pretty interesting life story. Born in Canada, he joined the Canadian army at age 19. He was in the Canadian forces that landed on Juno Beach on D-Day during World War II. Lost his Right middle finger in that battle. Joined acting classes on a whim after returning from the war. Went to school in New York for acting classes with Tony Randall and Leslie Nielson. Then he did some movies before landing the Star Trek job. He had practiced a number of accents and when asked by the producers how he should play the character he said, "If this character's going to be an engineer you'd better make him Scottish". Apparently they only made the Star Trek movie because of the success of Star Wars. He never got out of being type cast as "Scotty" even though he was faking the accent. He attended some conventions but I think he was upset about being type cast. I know that they made an episode of Futurama and got all the origional cast (Except for Deforest Kelly "Bones" who had passed away) and Doohan refused to do it. He also said he had had people scream "Beam me up, Scotty" across 4 lanes of traffic at 70 mph. The article I read also said that nobody ever ordered him to "Beam me up, Scotty". Closest was "Scotty, Beam me up" from Star Trek IV. Anyway just thought it was interesting. |
