Ok...that's about as uninformed a reason given to not watch something as I've ever heard.

Ranma 1/2 is a lot of fun. I suppose if one is an extreme moralistic Christian Conservative Fundamentalist there might be some "issues"...though I personally believe there really aren't any. This anime is cleaner and less violent than most. For one thing, nobody dies. There's no outright sex or anything like that. I would say it's a very clean comedic anime, and a lot of fun to watch.

There's no "going transvestite" to save someone at all in there. Yes, Ranma turns into a girl (hence the 1/2 part), but it wasn't by choice and it's an essential element of the story. I would say, watch it for yourself and come to your own conclusions about it.

There is some minor nudity, but if you've watched Tenchi, you get that too. I don't think this anime is anything to really shudder in horror over.

There are some things that are very Japanese (culture-wise) in there, but it is Japanese, so unless one is offended by other cultures, I don't see an issue there either.

Minagi, I allow my children to watch Ranma. I have season One and the OVA's; and have seen many other episodes online.

It does have occasional nudity that, from what I've seen, is not sexual in nature. Poor Ranma's mission is to find a way to become a man again full time.

It is very funny, and very sweet - especially when Akane mocks him for allowing a guy to steal his first kiss (while he was female). They then, tentatively nearly share their first kiss together.

Both Akane and Ranma are very prideful, and do not understand the opposite sex at ALL; which leads to most conflicts. The complications are from manipulative family and a host of strange characters pursuing both male and female Ranma, Akane, and each other. Not a love triangle, a love tangle too complicated for me to map out.

Unlike most Americans of course  It often surprises me what is popular (things that stand out in my mind as often hyped yet IMO not great are, as you said, Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D (although bloodlust is a lot better (yay, nested brackets!)) also I felt the same about Evangelion and FLCL (oh noes, *insert flaming here*)).

There are lots of great new series, although many do seem to be very much re-hashes (recently Trinity blood for example). But then I'm sure some of the series I enjoy were just the most recent incarnation of a trend and I just happened to get the one that was modern when I started watching.

Also: Watch Ranma now. It'll do you good.

Edit: I saw you location was Kingston BDB and thought for a second you were living in the awesomeness of Hull. Oh well. It's not surprising you meet fools in London... it's further south than Cambridge! And it's crazy enough here.

Well, when I went to Sweden everyone was hooked on Naruto and Bleach (...before licensing), but Sweden is a very pro-pirating country so people are much more aware of what is available on the internet.

I've seen Ranma already! Admittedly, I haven't read that much of the manga or seen past the third season, but that's because they started rehashing the plots and everything by then. The first series is really funny though.

Never really liked Eva, but FLCL was quite funny I thought. You are right, though. A lot of animes just follow suit and the general storylines and plots of its predecessors--some manage to break the mold and some revel in it (Naruto... zzz).

Kingston is, by and far, a glorified shopping with a nightlife.

Yes, I did get the PM reply but the times when I've been on MSN I haven't seen you (alas).

Anyway, welcome back!

The first two anime series I ever watched were Speed Racer and Gigantor, so I supposed that makes me something out of the Mesozoic Era. Later on, in the mid-70s, it was Raideen and Getter Robo G. I was totally blown away by those, considering that the best America had to offer was stuff like Superfriends and Clue Club.

I had a Raideen comic book when I was a very young kid. :P

Actually, my first real anime experience was Ikkyu-san (so yes, I'm not all that young either). :P

This is a surprisingly good discussion for this board in quite a while...

As ZL first stated, it is completely relative. However, I can agree that there were certain values in "old" anime that I definitely miss in the newer ones, mainly smaller production crews and more hand-drawn animation. But I have to admit there are still some gems out there nowadays. Using computers to animate everything is just the way of the future when it comes to animation and we'll just have to deal with it; honestly I don't care if something follows the old or the new styles of Japanimation, as long as it retains a core good plot, comedic timing, and doesn't use the computer animation as a crutch/excuse.

One anime of the "new" fold I have found very enjoyable lately is "Seto no Hanayome." Highly recommend that one.

My first experiences with anime were Sailor Moon and Samurai Pizza Cats, personally. So that is what I consider "old". Though I have a bit of a passion for retro anime, such as Captain Harlock and other Leiji Matsumoto stuff like Galaxy Express 999.

I'm into the mid-generation anime (late 80s/90's), as I grew up with the dubs of such shows. I have something against digital animation; sometimes it looks good, but other times - it looks cut & pasted, IE later InuYasha eps and S-CRY-Ed every time it does a super-fast panning shot of scenery.
