Post subject:  Comix Considers- A Review of the Special Edition of Coraline

Today I ventured to the depths to receive my preordered special editions of Coraline. As I rummaged through my free tote (which I received for preordering. Score one for Comix) and tore open the protective plastics of the shining metallically colored cover box, I found myself eagerly awaiting to place the shining silver disc into my DVD rom. (Bless Pete for putting up with my excitement!)

THE FILM ITSELF-
I’m not sure who’s all read the original Neil Gaiman story. For those of you who haven’t- it’s not a problem in this case. The story speaks for itself, not for the inside readers. For those of you that HAVE, I put on a little disclaimer: there has been a character added. Normally in a film based off a familiar story, this causes anger, sadness, and downright mellow drama to fans. However, I find the character of Whybe in this case to be a likable addition that flows well with the story without feeling awkward or sloppy. The story ran well. I never felt a moment that was too long or too short for my taste. The visuals are stunning, and probably the best I’ve seen in a film run by puppetry. Simple uses of color greatly emphasize places and events in the film. Overall, I think Selick did a great job. A minor note though: this film is NOT meant for young children. I did see nearly every small child cry when I saw it in theaters. There’s a lot of ‘scary’ stuff for youngins and lets just saw there in an ‘Aphrodite‘ that is VERY close to the original painting clothing wise. 9_9

ON THE SPECIAL EDITION-

This edition gives you the option of watching the film in either 2D or 3D, which is a pretty cool set up. (Yes dearies, four glasses are provided). You are able to view scenes that were deleted for the film, as well as watch a whole bunch of commentary on the making of. Puppets are put together, the garden is built…it’s really interesting and very cool.

OVERALL-
I highly recommend seeing the film. Rent it. Buy it. Borrow it. Do whatever you have to. If you enjoy stop motion, it’s a must see.

FAVORITE SCENE- I love the mouse circus. It rocked my socks.

Great film, and as for the Whybe scenario: never read the book, but it's understandable. They did it so she wasn't constantly talking to herself - works for me!

That would be SO awkward.

"What the heck? I've stumbled onto a strange alternate dimesion with button eyed people?"

If she talked to herself...you might as well just cast me. XD
