This is a short story I had to write for a creative writing class. It has nothing to do with anime, but still good. CAUTION! There is extreme violence, swearing, and a racial slur, so if this may offend you, don't read. Shelter In the near future, the government developed a new strain of the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, or, in layman’s terms, the human form of mad cow disease. It acted quickly, taking out the reasoning and sane part of the mind, leaving the infected a dangerous and legally insane individual. It was contracted through food and water, and could take effect in a matter of hours. Somehow, the disease got out, and a global pandemic occurred. Thankfully, the government developed a purification process, though it was not a cure. The new chemical, dubbed “The Cleanser”, was toted as a way to save the population. By this time, half the world had been claimed. When enough of the chemical was produced, about two thirds of the world was gone. Grahm woke up in his bunk, and looked around. The room was empty, and he could not hear the voices of his friends. He quickly got up, grabbed his Silenced Colt .45, and slowly opened the door. He took a quick glance out in both directions. The hall was empty. He crouched and slowly walked out of the room. He slowly headed to the mess hall, stopping at corners and peeking around them. It was just too quiet in the bunker. Minutes later, he arrived at the mess hall. It too was empty. He took a glance around the corner. “Grahm, what the hell are you doing?” he heard a voice behind him say. He jumped up, turned around, and aimed the gun at the person behind him. “Jesus Christ! Aim that fucking thing away from me!” the person yelled. It was Grahm’s room mate, Joshua. “What the hell, you scared the shit out of me!” yelled Grahm. He put his gun in his holster and looked around. “Where is everyone?” he asked. “They’re all in the meeting room. Lieutenant Perry said something about getting a call on the radio transmitter,” said Joshua, “He sent me out here to wake you up. Looks like you did that yourself!” Joshua chuckled. If the Lieutenant wanted what was left of their ramshackle troop in the meeting room, it usually wasn’t good. A few minutes later, the two of them made it to the meeting hall. Lieutenant Perry did not look happy. “Now that everyone is here and awake, we can start this,” he said, “A few hours ago, I got a radio transmission from a shelter on the other side of the city. It sounded like it was another unit, and they were out of cleansers. Now, we have plenty of cleansers, and little food, so I am taking this sorry bunch of inbreeds to that shelter, and I am not hearing any complaining.” “But The Crazies are out there! How many of us do you want to get killed?” yelled Lee, another member of the troop. “Personally, you fucking chink, I don’t give a damn about what you say. Were leaving, and that’s final! Pack up, we’re going in an hour!” yelled Perry. “You don’t have to be such a fucking prick, sir!” yelled Grahm. Perry looked over at him. “Just be glad I haven’t court marshaled you’re ass, private! You better be thankful for that!” yelled Perry. “Yes sir, f!@# you very much, sir!” yelled Grahm. About an hour later, Grahm and the rest of the troop, all seven of them, were packed and at the exit of the bunker. “Now stay frosty, those Madders will use any opportunity to kill.” said Perry. He pushed a button and the door opened slowly. The troops raised their Assault Rifles for safety. The area was clear. They quietly left the bunker and looked around. The land was, in a sense, dead. The city they were stationed by was once a bright place, but now, due to the government failed first contingency plan, it was a smoky, crater filled land. Remnants of the past were everywhere. Old signs, a car here or there, even a newsstand. The troop continued along slowly, looking for cover incase of an attack by the infected. The infected went by many slang terms, Crazies, Madders, Nutters, etc. And they saw everything as a threat. Lieutenant Perry motioned them to get low, and brought a finger to his lips, telling the troop to be quiet. He then pointed at the troop sniper, Conner, and signaled him over. “The bees, everywhere, bees. I NEED PAPER!” a voice said in the distance. Grahm knew it instantly to be a Crazy. They were always saying strange things that only made sense to them. “I don’t want that Crazy alerting our presence. Get up to a high point and take him out. And be quiet about it, for God’s sake!” whispered Perry. Conner nodded and quietly walked over to a pile of rubble, and the troop hid behind another pile a few yards away. Grahm crawled to the top and pulled out a pair of binoculars. He looked through them and saw a Crazy pacing back and forth, about 40 yards away. Grahm heard a click, and saw crimson fly in the air as the Crazy fell. He looked over, and Conner crawled down the rubble pile. He looked back through the binoculars and saw three more Crazies looking at their recently deceased comrade. One pointed in their general direction, and yelled out some kind of gibberish. Six more Crazies appeared out of buildings and alleyways and started to run in their direction. “SHIT!” yelled Grahm, “We gotta hide somewhere better, quick! There are about nine Crazies headed towards us!” Lieutenant Perry looked around and pointed to a medium sized building. He did not have to say anything, as the troop ran inside. There was some furniture inside, along with some small appliances, hygiene products, and some food, possibly infected. Grahm decided that the building must have been a Wal-Mart at sometime. He saw two soldiers, Jackson and Willis, move some furniture in front of the door. Lee was leaning up against a wall shaking. “Oh god, were all gonna die! Someone help us!” sobbed Lee. He was shaking, and was panicking pretty bad. “Shut up, private!” yelled Perry. Lee continued to cry and shake. “I said shut up, damn it!” yelled Perry. Lee looked up. “BUT WERE GOING TO D…” he said, but never finished, and he never would. A small click ended his sentence, for bits of his own blood, skull, and brain matter covered the wall behind him. Lieutenant Perry had killed him. “YOU FUCKING BASTARD! YOU DIDN’T HAVE TO KILL HIM!” yelled Grahm. He tried to lunge at Perry, but he was restrained by Joshua and Conner. Lieutenant Perry looked over. He aimed his gun at Grahm. “Are you willing to take a chance, soldier?” he asked quietly. Grahm spit at him. “f!@# YOU! f!@# YOU ALL THE WAY TO HELL!” yelled Grahm. Lieutenant Perry looked at him, then quickly moved his gun and shot Joshua in the foot. “GOD DAMN IT! f!@# f!@# f!@# f!@#!” yelled Joshua. Perry holstered his gun and looked at the rest of the troop. “Anyone who doesn’t follow my orders will get a warning, and if they don’t abide by the warning, they get executed. Any questions?” said Perry. The rest of the troop stared at him. “Willis, bandage that soldier up.” ordered Perry. A few hours later, the troop had left the Wal-Mart via the rear exit and quietly walked to the shelter, which was only a mile away. The road was quiet, no birds, water dripping, rubble falling, etc. Grahm was helping Joshua walk along. Lieutenant Perry stopped by a large puddle and signaled the troop to crouch by it. Perry pulled out his assault rifle and looked down the sights. He looked up at a building that had half the side blown off. He shot at something, which ran off deeper into the building. It knocked loose a piece of rubble, which fell into the puddle. A small bit of water splashed onto Jackson’s face. “Oh god, it got in my eyes…” he said quietly. He pulled out his pistol and cocked it. “I am NOT turning into some crazy meat bag!” he shouted. He put the gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. Bits of gore flew from the back of his head as he collapsed. No one dared to speak. The troop continued on. About an hour later, and a half mile from the shelter, Grahm had climbed up a rubble pile and pulled out his binoculars. He didn’t see anything suspicious, so he signaled his group to continue. The air was still quiet, but that did not settle Grahm’s nerves. Something was amiss. “Hey, I found a dead body!” yelled Willis. He pointed to a dead body at his feet, near a building corner. Suddenly, three Crazies ran around the corner and tackled Willis. They started to beat his head with large rocks, as blood was flying. Willis was screaming, then, with a horrid gurgling sound, he stopped. The Crazies got up and looked at the troop. “There! More Pig Men! They want our magic rocks!” said one Crazy, pointing at the troop. “No, they’re Banana Men, and they want our hair!” said the other Crazy. The three of them started to argue, and the troop ran off behind a rubble pile. There was a person behind it. “Wait, don’t shoot, I’m not a Madder!” the person said quietly. Perry aimed his pistol and shot him to death anyway. The last three soldiers stared at their lieutenant. “He said he wasn’t a Crazy…” Grahm said quietly. “We couldn’t take the chance, he could have been lying.” said Perry. Grahm gave him the evil eye. The lieutenant was getting to him, and Grahm knew, if he pulled one more stunt like that, it would be his last. An hour later, the troop finally arrived at the shelter. A child ran out of the shelter up to the troop. “Are you the good soldier guys who’s gonna make our food good again?” said the child. “Such a pity.” said Perry as he pulled out his gun. “What are you doing, lieutenant?” asked Grahm. “She’s obviously a Crazy, so I have to dispose of her.” said Perry. He took aim. Grahm tackled Perry and pulled his gun out. Perry tried to shoot Grahm, but Grahm started to hit the lieutenant with his pistol handle. “YOU CRAZY SON OF A BITCH! I HAVE HAD IT!” yelled Grahm, as he continued to beat Perry. Joshua and Conner had to pull Grahm off when there was nothing left of Perry’s head but a smear on the ground. Grahm took the sack full of Cleansers that Perry had had, and turned to his to comrades. “I’m leading this troop now, if that’s okay.” said Grahm. The two nodded, and they headed into the shelter with the child. A man was waiting just inside. “So you have the Cleansers?” said the man. Grahm nodded. “Oh good, it has been a few days since we ate, and we have been rationing our clean water. Thank god you arrived.” The man said. They headed to the main room as alarms went off. “Crazies are attacking, they have opened the door!” said a voice over a loud speaker. Grahm, Joshua, and Conner armed their Rifles and turned around, waiting for the Crazies… |
